Hundreds of Spanish Settlers Died at the ‘Port of Famine.’ This Newly Discovered Silver Coin Reveals Where the Doomed Colony Was Founded 400 Years Ago
Ciudad del Rey Don Felipe was established on the north shore of Chile’s Strait of Magellan in 1584. When an English navigator came across it several years later, few survivors remained.
Spain had ambitious plans when it established a colony around Chile’s Strait of Magellan in the 16th century, but within a few years, both the settlement and the empire’s dreams had gone awry. The majority of the settlers at Ciudad del Rey Don Felipe—later dubbed Puerto del Hambre, or “Port Famine”—succumbed to starvation, the elements and various diseases. | Fort Pierce South Beach Monday from SurfGuru.com. |
A small cut began to develop on Fort Pierce South Beach Monday morning around 10 or 11 AM. You can see it above the yellow machine in the photo above. It appears that the high tide last night washed it out and very little of it remained Tuesday morning.
It was interesting to watch. First the slope steepened. Then a crease appeared, and then the dut developed, but it was probably no more than a foot or so high.
Here are a couple views of Wabasso Tuesday morning.

Here is Wabasso (far south) Tuesday Morning.
Wabasso wasn't much changed from Monday. Here is a look at that.
I didn't see anything much on the Jensen or Bathtub Beach cams this morning either.

The surf will be decreasing through Tuesday. We will soon be into summer beach conditions.
In the next day or two I'll probably do a post on reading cuts.
