8/13/25 Report - Metal Detected Bedale Hoard Silver Analyzed. Slipway for 18th Century Ships. Benefits of Nature. Erin Track.

In 2012, while searching in Bedale, North Yorkshire, metal-detectorists Stuart Campbell and Steve Caswell discovered a remarkable assemblage of 37 silver and gold objects of Viking-Age date. The Bedale hoard, as it is now known, represents a snapshot of the substantial wealth resources in Scandinavian hands in northern England during the late ninth or early tenth century  (Source: The Provenance of Silver in the Viking‐Age Hoard From Bedale, North Yorkshire - Kershaw -) Archaeometry - Wiley Online Library

Continuing on the same story, but with another article....

The study used geochemical analysis to trace the origins of silver ingots and jewellery items from the Bedale hoard, discovered in 2012. The results show that while the bulk of the silver derives from western European sources – likely from Anglo-Saxon and Carolingian coinage acquired through raiding or ransom – a substantial portion originated from Islamic silver coinage, or dirhams, transported via Scandinavian trade routes.

The hoard, which includes 29 silver ingots and several elaborate neck-rings, dates to the late ninth or early tenth century and reflects the blending of different cultural and economic influences in Viking Age England. Significantly, the analysis confirms that the Vikings did not rely solely on looting to accumulate wealth, but also participated in far-reaching commercial networks stretching across Europe and into the Middle East and Central Asia.

A slipway from the 18th Century where ships for Lord Nelson's fleet were built and launched has been excavated by archaeologists...

A total of 55 wooden warships were built at Buckler's Hard for the Royal Navy in the 1700s, some of which were comparable in size to HMS Victory.

"No other private yard built as many ships for the navy during this period," said Prof Jon Adams, director of the university's Centre for Maritime Archaeology...

Did you know that you can get a variety of views from some, if not all, of the Surfguru.com beach cams?  When you first select a beach cam you will see one view, but you can select other views. First click on the picture to get the View Controls.

The view below is the Beach South Zoom on the Fort Pierce South Jetty beach cam.

To change views, notice the blue box below the picture and on the left side.  That is the camera control box.  After clicking on the control box you will receive the options.  To get the photo above, I selected Beach South Zoom.  You can see the name of the selected view under the right corner of the photo.  By hitting the down arrow, you can select other views.

I selected Jetty End, and got the following view.

Try it out.  You can get a variety of views.

As you can see, this morning the surf is very flat at this spot.

Tropical Storm Erin is staying on track.  It is expected to be a hurricane but then weaken some.  Remain alert to any possible change in the forecast.

Surf Forecast from SurfGuru.com.

Looks like in about a week we might get some higher surf, although the prediction is now showing a foot less than yesterday.  Thats not very significant, but could show the beginning of a trend.  I hope not, but it could be.

I heard one truth-proofed political hopeless claim that detainees are being fed to alligators, but I haven't found any evidence of that yet. Alligator skin provides a source of hyaluronic acid.  The acid helps fight bacteria and fungi, which I would imagine is needed by any creature that dwells in the swamp. Immersion in nature is one of the side benefits of the treasure hunting lifestyle.  I personally prefer the 400 Hertz buzz of a female mosquito to the Musak of Hades base (wordplay intentional) beat that too often drowns out the sounds of cicada, calls of the distant hawk or osprey, or the sound of  sound of treasure whistling through the holes in your metal detector rod.

Good hunting,
