3/20/24 Report - Late Season Cold Front Produces Erosion on Some Beaches.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of the Treasure Beaches Report.

John Brooks Beach Tuesday Morning Before Low Tide.

So yesterday I got up and looked out the window and saw a good blowy morning.  The wind was coming from the north and Surfguru said the surf was three to five feet, also from the north, so I expected erosion to be starting.  The wind was fairly strong and very much from the north.

I went out to see how the beaches were developing.

Wide Beach At John Brooks Tuesday Morning.

Got out of the car and was impressed by the width of the beach.  I've seen it eroded a hundred yards or so farther back.

In front of the beach, though, there was a cut, which you can see in the photo at the top of the post.

You can see the wide wind swept beach in this photo.

Cut Along John Brooks Beach Tuesday Morning.

I didn't get a photo from an angle where that shows the height of the cut, but it was nearly two feet.

Frederick Douglass Beach Tuesday Morning.

As usual Frederick Douglass looked very similar to John Brooks.

There is a good example of how beaches cut.  In the above photo, you can see the slab of sand sliding down and where the water sliced at the bottom of the cut.

Walton Rocks did not show a cut but the slope was eroded back some.

Walton Rocks Tuesday Morning.

Walton Rocks showed no cuts of any size, but you could tell the beach has been eroding away.  A lot of the sand they put in the last time is gone again.

Some rocks were visible near the low tide zone even though the tide was not very low yet.

You can look out the window or the Surg sites and have a pretty good guess at what the beach will be doing.

Today the strong north wind was enough to suggest cutting, but the surf and tides were not that big, so the cut was near the front of the beach.  Unless you have eroded beaches to begin with, that usually won't get you into older material.

Surf Chart From SurfGuru.com.

Wednesday the wind is supposed to shift from north to more easterly.

It is about time for summer conditions to set in.  We will probably not have many more cool fronts like this one.  Instead, we will be watching for tropical storms and hurricanes.

Good hunting.
