You might find this site on coin grading useful.

Below is a brief excerpt.

The blog SilverCoins.com makes the excellent observation: “Half science half art, the skill of grading coins can be learned with time and use.” With this in mind, you can learn how to grade coins yourself. In fact, it's important for you to do so if you want to be a successful collector.

Sure, you could exclusively buy coins that are already professionally graded. But if you want to be able to cherrypick raw (ungraded) coins, you will need a keen eye for grading coins yourself.

The best way to get an accurate sense for the grade of a coin is to use reference images. These are helpfully included in most coin collecting guides that focus on specific coin series, such as those published by Whitman Publishing. It can also be helpful to have some examples of a particular coin design in-hand...

Some finds can fool you.  Here is one that fooled me.

Two Views of Find.

I had this one around for a good while before discovering what it was.  I thought it was just a broken piece off something.  Then on the inside (right view above) I saw that it is marked 14K.  I still didn't know what it was until I discovered the two holes, which maybe you can see on each side of the peak of the item in the photo on the right.  There is a slit on both the left and right side of the top triangle shape.  It is a pendant.  A chain would go though the two holes.  It took a long time before I saw that.

A few days ago I posted a terra cotta coin bank.  Here is another terra cotta item I found in the same area back around the same time.

Terra Cotta Miniature Vast Find.

The top is broken and it has a few barnacle marks on it.  It is about 2.5 inches tall.

We are going to have some pretty big tides today.  The highs are over three and the lows are negative.

Along with that we have some brisk north winds.

I'd expect to see some erosion today on some beaches today.
