11/7/23 Report - Treasure Coast Beach and Small Surf For a While. Excavations at Alamo Produce Finds of Various Periods.

North of Inlet

Yesterday (Monday) Russ sent me this report, including photos, showing the continuing development of one Treasure Coast Beach.

Visited a few areas this morning north of the inlet and

a lot of the sand had washed down and smoothed out.

A few spots the footprints and tire tracks where 4-6 inches deep. Didn’t bother.

Tried a local tourist beach and found a few miscellaneous items. 

One area had a large fishing net with the rigging washed ashore...

Alamo Relics.

Archaeologists at the Alamo uncovered musket balls and ceramics from the Spanish colonial era at a dig last week...

Archaeologists discovered two musket balls, multiple types of ceramics, glass, gunflints, European earthenware and debris from creation of stone tools.

One glass jar was found completely intact, as seen in photos on the Alamo’s Facebook page...

Ceramic fragments from the Spanish colonial and Goliad eras were discovered, the preservation update said, meaning the artifacts come from a wide range of time periods.

The Treasure Coast weather has calmed down a bit.

So we'll have about a week of small surf before possibly another increase.

Notice that the wind is still north today but will be doing some switching.

The high tides are going to be good and high today, but the low tides won't be very low.

11/6/23 Report - Fourth Century Coins Found. Sheathing Tack Recently Found On Treasure Coast.

A diver who spotted something metallic not far from Sardinia's coast has led to the discovery of tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins...

The coins dating from the first half of the fourth century were found in sea grass, not far from the northeast shore of the Mediterranean island. The ministry didn't say exactly when the first diver caught a glimpse of something metallic just off shore Sardinia... 

A ministry statement estimated that there are at least about 30,000 and possibly as many as 50,000, given their collective weight...

“All the coins were in an excellent and rare state of preservation,” the ministry said. The few coins that were damaged still had legible inscriptions, it said...

The coins were mainly found in a wide area of sand between the underwater seagrass and the beach, the ministry said. Given the location and shape of the seabed, there could be remains of ship wreckage nearby, the ministry said...

Today the surf remained about four or five feet.  The wind was from the north and will remain from the north at least part of another day.

The high tides haven't been real high and the low tides haven't been very low at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some erosion, but would suspect that it would be on the beach front rather than farther back.

Mark G. sent in the following report and photo.

I was out Friday couldn’t hit the low tides and don’t think there would much of one with the winds blowing the water up the beach conditions were brutal to hit the coin line so I headed up the beach. With the bad weather and a weekday there were not many people on the beach so I did some dry sanding. I had to laugh when I found the Halloween earring. There couldn’t be better proof that the beaches were starting to replenish themselves already.

So far I haven't heard of any old shipwreck finds from the past few days.

If you were out this afternoon, you probably noticed the north wind.  Both the wind and surf was supposed to be from the north.  The SurfGuru chart shows that.

Notie the wind and surf lines on the chart.  The wind is supposed to continue from the north tomorrow.

Too bad the surf will be only about three or four feet, and the high tides are not going to be real high.  The low tides aren't going to be real low either.

I took at Fort Pierce South Jetty a time or two in the past week when going to Brooks and Douglass and didn't think it was worth detecting.  Don't really remember how much I tested it, if at all.

You might recall that some of the treasure finds from last year came from down in the Martin County area.  

Here is what Michael T. said.

Good morning it’s Mike T. from Stuart. As you know there hasn’t been a lot of good spots to hunt lately with all the sand that had built back in but we finally got our first nor’easter and there were some really good spots that opened up on some of the Martin County beaches. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen so many drop offs and cuts running the length of the beaches!

    When I saw the forecast for a strong North wind for at least one good high tide I got more excited than a kid in on Christmas Eve. :)

  The pics are from three separate hunts over 24 hours from Wednesday evening when the north wind was really howling to Thursday evening when it had shifted more to the east and things were starting to fill. The first evening Wednesday when the north wind was blowing straight down the beach about 40 miles an hour there were so many turtle nests that had been washed out that the eggs were falling out of the cuts and blowing down the beach like ping-pong balls it was actually quite strange to see it happening. It was a first for me to see so many!

   It’s always good to find some gold and I was very hopeful. That would be the case. The two bracelets are 14 karat and the two charms are 10 karat. There were some various silver items as well like charms, pendants etc.

    I mostly use my equinox 800 with the 15 inch coiltech coil. It covers a lot of ground quickly and then when I found a few really good spots I came back with my Whites Dualfield PI machine to clean up the deep small stuff.

     Nine hours of heavy hunting. I’m pretty sore this morning its gonna take a few days to recover but it was worth it.   I didn’t see as many people out hunting as I thought I would given good conditions, but hopefully some others had some good finds as well.

    November has always been one of my favorite months with the cold fronts starting their annual march down the state and that North wind blowing.

It seems like some of the cuts that were sharp the first day have been softening.  That seems to be the most descriptive terms I can come up with. 

It is common for a front to come through and the first day or so while the wind is north to see some good sharp cuts, but then the wind shifts around and starts to refill the beaches.  Of course, and when that happens some of the other spots that run in different directions and didn't initially cut, can then open up.

11/3/23 Report - Watching Changing Conditions on the Treasure Coast.

In  Front of the Turtle Trail Access Thursday Near High Tide.

I had an appointment in Vero again today, so when I was done with that I got a chance to take a look at one of the nearer beaches.  Unfortunately, it was near high tide.

The photo above was from right in front of the access at Turtle Trail.  The water was intermittently hitting the face of the cut.

The photo made the cut look higher than it was, but I think it was five feet or so at that location.

Standing on top, the cut doesn't look as big.  The rough water was keeping most beach goers on the walkover.

The cut wasn't so big down by the second flagpole, but the photo makes the cut look even smaller, since I was standing on top of the dry sand focusing down when I took the photo.

I didn't get a good photo of the bags.  I had to snap the photo when the water was at its lowest to show them.   The water was covering them most of the time, but they were sticking out more today.  This is the place where they seemed to be most exposed at the time.

Since it was nearly high tide when I was there, I was only able to metal detect the area right in front of the cut, which was all renourishment sand.  In places it was pretty mushy.

I would have liked to have been there later so I could metal detect, or at least see, the area in front of the bags.  

At least some of the renourishment sand is being dragged out.

Surf Chart For Fort Pierce Inlet Area.

I'm not expecting much more improvement.  There is still a lot of replenishment sand.  The tides are not as big, and the winds are switching direction.

At least some of the renourishment sand got moved, but so did a lot of the turtle eggs, which were unfortunate enough to be in the renourishment sand.

I showed Turtle Trail eroding around noon Wednesday, and later in the afternoon went to John Brooks and Frederick Douglass around 4 PM Wednesday.

You might remember that I showed John Brooks with a cut a few days ago and then showed it again a day or two later after the cut was gone again.  Well, it is cut again.

I did a little metal detecting at John Brooks.  There were some coins on the beach and several iron nails and a little other junk.

Using the Equinox in pinpoint mode reminded me very much of using the Sovereign in All Metals mode.

Frederick Douglass Wednesday Afternoon.

Unlike Brooks, Frederick Douglass was not cut at the time.

The wind was from the north yesterday, but later in the day started to turn a little, and as you can from the chart below, will continue to turn.

You can see that the wind will peak late Wednesday/early Thursday, as will the surf.

The high tides are not as high as they were in recent days.

I had an appointment in the Vero area and was going by Turtle Trail, so got the chance to take a look.  As you can see, Turtle Trail was eroding.  It was just a touch after high tide.

Looking at the beach, you could see what I've been talking about.  The brisk north wind was pushing the water to the south as it came off the beach.

DJ sent this photo yesterday pointing out the brisk wind.  He saw the gale warnings online.

If you look at the SurfGuru surf chart, you'll notice the period of north wind on the chart.

I just wanted to point out the eroding beaches while it is happening.  Don't know if I'll get a chance to get out and do some metal detecting.  I hope so but doubt it.
