You might be wondering what a Dire Wolf skull fossil has to do with the Treasure Coast?  If so, you might be surprised to learn that dire wolf fossils have been found on a Treasure Coast beach.  I know of two nice Dire Wolf teeth, which, by the way, have resulted unsolicited offers to buy.

Of course, many kinds of fossils have been found on Treasure Coast beaches - everything from mammoth to whale and rhinoceros as well as fossils from many smaller animals.

Fossils can also be found in the Intracoastal Waterway and on some spoil islands.  It was a shark tooth fossil (Great White) I found in the Indian River that was one of my first fossil finds.  You might see one in your scoop sometime too if you are digging in loose materials or scooping shells in shallow water.  

Fossils come in many varieties and might not be recognized.  

When Richard Hulbert of the Florida Museum was at the Vero Man event in Vero many years ago, he identified random finds by people, and there were a lot of people who brought their odd finds for identification.  As I recall, some were found in the Vero area and up through Sebastian as well as some of the more southerly beaches of the Treasure Coast.

Southern Italy and Sicily had no silver and had to import it to mint coins. Hoards found there contain silver ingots and coins from the Eastern Mediterranean as well as coins minted locally. This suggests that people there needed silver, rather than the coins in particular. Silver coins from various mints and cut metal (hacksilver)...

(NEXSTAR) – There are new coins a plenty coming from the U.S. Mint this year in honor of America’s semiquincentennial, but one piece may be drawing extra attention. 

Recently, the Mint sent specially marked quarters into circulation, giving Americans “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover a piece of history in everyday transactions.” 

The quarters are unique in two ways. First, they feature the Declaration of Independence design that was among five new faces available for quarters produced this year. Second, they sport a “July 4th” privy mark.

“This is more than a coin; it’s a defining moment in our nation’s story,” Mint Director Paul Hollis said in a press release. “We hope Americans enjoy the search for these iconic quarters as they’re meant to be shared, saved, and remembered as part of this historic anniversary.” 

The Mint released only 250,000 of the quarters randomly into circulation...
