12/12/21 Report. Beach Renourishment Update. Treasure Hunter Still in Jail. Peru Indigenous Creche in Rome.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The representation of Peru’s diverse Indigenous communities in this year’s Nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square embodies the joy and hope of their faith, said Peruvian Bishop Carlos Alberto Salcedo Ojeda of Huancavelica, Peru.

Bishop Salcedo joined Jorge Eduardo Román Morey, the Peruvian ambassador to the Vatican, and other Peruvians to show journalists around the Vatican Nativity scene Dec. 9.

In October, the Vatican City State governing office said the 30-piece Nativity scene from Peru’s Huancavelica region was chosen, in part, to mark the 200th anniversary of Peru’s independence.

Statues of Joseph and Mary, as well as the Three Kings, are dressed in the traditional bright, multicolored garments of the region’s Indigenous Chopcca people...

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A former deep-sea treasure hunter is preparing to mark his sixth year in jail for refusing to disclose the whereabouts of 500 missing coins made from gold found in an historic shipwreck.

Research scientist Tommy Thompson has been held in contempt of court since Dec. 15, 2015, for that refusal. He is also incurring a daily fine of $1,000.

Thompson's case dates to his discovery of the S.S. Central America, known as the Ship of Gold, in 1988. The gold rush-era ship sank in a hurricane off South Carolina in 1857 with thousands of pounds of gold aboard, contributing to an economic panic...

Update on Indian River County beach restoration.

  • IRC Beach 7 Dune Restoration Update - Phase 1: Construction out of Treasure Shores Beach Park is nearing completion. Dune planting was scheduled to begin this week.  Phase 2: Active sand placement occurring out of Seagrape Trail Beach Access shifted operations starting on Wednesday, December 8th, traveling to the northern end of the project area and filling while moving south. Please be aware of truck movements taking place between Seagrape Trail Beach Access and the southern end of Disney's Vero Beach Resort. TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico (AP) — Survivors of the horrific truck crash in Mexico that killed 55 migrants and injured more than a hundred recounted from their hospital beds how their location inside the truck determined who lived and who died...

It was one of the deadliest days for migrants in Mexico since the 2010 massacre of 72 people by the Zetas drug cartel in the northern state of Tamaulipas.

While the Mexican government is trying to appease the United States by stopping caravans of walking migrants and allowing the reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, it has been unable to stanch the flood of migrants stuffed by the hundreds into trucks operated by smugglers who charge thousands of dollars to take them to the U.S. border — trips that all too often lead them only to their deaths...
