2/9/23 Report - More Metal Detector Tests: Silver and Clad Dollar Coins. Sedwick Coins. Higher Surf.

1922 Peach Dollar and Eisenhower Dollar Coin
Used In Today's Tests.

I continued with my series of tests.  Today I compared a 1922 silver Peace dollar with a clad Eisenhower dollar using the Equinox 600 and the same test site.

Here are the details on the Peace Dollar.

Here are the details for the Eisenhower dollar once again.

Metal Composition: 91.67% Copper - 8.33% Nickel
Diameter: 38.1 mm

Mass / Weight: 22.68 grams

So the silver dollar is 90% silver and the Eisenhower dollar is just over 90% copper.  The diameter is the same, but the weight of the Eisenhower collar is about four grams less than the Peace dollar.

Like with the half dollar coins, the silver dollar and peace dollar were picked up at essentially the same depth by the Equinox 600 metal detector. Furthermore, both coins produced very similar conductivity numbers.

I got mostly 35 - 36 for the Eisenhower dollar, and 34 - 36 for the Peace dollar.  That is when the coins are not too deep and there is not too much electrical interference.  That was very little diffferent from the Kennedy half (33).

You get solid conductivity numbers when coins are not far from the coil and when there isn't too much noise from electrical interference.  As the distance is increased and as noise interference is increased. the numbers become more variable.  If you get out to maximum detection depth, the conductivity numbers become very inconsistent.  If you get a lot of noise or near maximum detection depth, you start to see some really wild or inaccurate numbers being produced.

Relative to silver, copper is just a little less conductive.  My little tests seem to show that the 90% silver coins produce about the same conductivity numbers as the clad coins, which are mostly copper.  As you can see from the abbreviated table below silver and copper are pretty similar in conductivity.

Conductivity of a Few Metals Relative to Silver.

Here is a longer table of the conductivity of various metals.

As you can see the conductivity of copper is not too different than the conductivity of silver.  Maybe when I test some other coins, including gold, we'll find that the conductivity numbers better indicate the type of metal and type of coin.

\I did't test the Ace today, but assume that since it has been totally accurate on all the half and dollar coins so far, it would have been  just as accurate on the Peace dollar.

Today we have a higher surf ( 4 -7) with winds from the south.

I didn't get a chance to get out.

Good hunting,
