Ampulla and Spoon Used In

If you didn't watch the coronation yesterday you missed a lot of history and a some of the most amazing artifacts you will ever see.  Above is a gold ampulla that was used and a spoon from the sixth century.  You can clearly see once again, that old doesn't mean crude. 

The consecrated oil is poured from the Ampulla into the double head of the spoon so the Archbishop can dip his fingers into it.

He will then anoint the King and Queen Camilla with the sign of the cross on his hand, his chest and his head.

The spoon only survived the civil war because a servant purchased it in a sale of the executed Charles I’s goods, then later returned it to Charles II.

The spoon was first recorded in 1349, and was already described as an antique even then – thought to date from the 1100s. This would make it the only piece of royal goldsmiths’ work to survive from that century...

John Brooks Beach Sunday Morning.

I hadn't been able to get out much lately, but had a chance this morning even though I didn't expect the beaches to be very good.  I was right about that.  The beaches in my area were plain ugly.

At John Brooks I could see that there had been a little erosion that was mostly filled again.  The slope was mushy.

The waves were hitting straight on, and they weren't that big anyway.

Blind Creek was about the same.  There were, however, some beach goers there if you are interested in detecting for modern items.

Miles and miles of sand.  That is what you see at Fort Pierce South Jetty Beach.

If you choose to detect a beach like that, there is a huge area to cover and very few good targets.

There is some aluminum and some squashed cans and other junk in that new sand, but little else.

Overall, the beaches of South Hutchinson Island looked poor.  You can however find some areas where it is a little better.

5/6/23 Report - Men Accused of Trying to Illegally Sell Treasure Coins. Ocean Temperatures At Record High.

Two men who tried to sell 44 rare Anglo-Saxon coins worth £766,000 have each been jailed for five years.

Craig Best, 46, and Roger Pilling, 75, were caught in a police sting in May 2019, Durham Crown Court heard.

The coins are thought to be part of a multimillion-pound haul buried by the Vikings and should have been handed to the Crown to be declared treasure.

Best, from County Durham, and Pilling, from Lancashire, were found guilty of conspiring to sell criminal property.

They were both jailed for five years and two months.

The coins are thought to have been part of the Herefordshire Hoard, a haul of about 300 coins found by two different metal detectorists in 2015.

In 2019, the two discoverers were jailed for selling the items and not declaring them as "treasure" under the Treasure Act 1996...

They were keen metal detectorists but had no discussion about selling the coins, he said.

He claimed Mr Pilling had told him that he had bought the coins before the Treasure Act 1996 was brought into law.

Ron Bude, a coin expert in America, was contacted by Best to confirm whether the coins were genuine, the court heard, but became suspicious and contacted colleagues in the UK which led to the undercover sting...

Ocean surface heat is at record breaking levels.  Temperatures began climbing in mid-March and skyrocketed over the course of several weeks, leaving scientists scrambling to figure out exactly why.

Here is a good document designed help people with little or no background in historic artifact identification sufficient information to provide consistent descriptive information about the artifacts and site features they observe.  It is the Historic Artifact Handbook by Jonathon C. Horn Alpine Archaeological Consultants, Inc. PO Box 2075 Montrose, CO 81402,  March 2005/.

Categories include vessel glass, ceramics, cans, plastic, window glass, nails, cartridges, buttons and fasteners, animal shoes, beads, wire products, stove parts, etc.  It includes some categories that you don't find described very often, such as trestles, screws and beer cans.

The information in the document, as the description says, is basic.  You probably know a lot of what is included, but there are some things that you might find helpful.  As is often the case, the bibliography is good and will point you to many good reference sources.  Although it is pretty basic, I think anybody will find some helpful hints.  Check it out.

If you've ever done any hunting in Colorado, you might notice that it was constructed with that kind of area in mind.  

Below is a little segment of a post I once did after a little trip to Colorado where I found an old cabin site.  The area was covered with metal roofing and junk.

Below is a photo of a place where there was once an old Cabin.  This photo isn't from the Treasure Coast.  In fact, it isn't even Florida.  It is in the Rocky Mountains.   But I like the photo and the stove and wanted to show how the ground can be littered with all kinds of junk that can make detecting difficult.

If you look closely, you can see the tin roofing and other metal scattered all over the site.  That would keep a lot of people from detecting.

The thing to do is clean up the site a little.  Pick up the big pieces of tin and stuff and pile it up so you can detect most of the area.

2,000-year-old hoard of Roman coins may have been hidden by a soldier during a bloody civil war in Italy

A hoard of 175 silver coins unearthed in a forest in Italy may have been buried for safe keeping during a Roman civil war.

The coins seem to date from 82 B.C., the year the Roman general Lucius Cornelius Sulla fought a bloody war across Italy against his enemies among the leaders of the Roman Republic, which resulted in Sulla's victory and his ascension as dictator of the Roman state...

Researchers discovered the coin hoard buried in a terracotta pot in 2021 but kept it secret so that the site could be completely investigated.,

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A former FBI agent has been arrested for his alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and charged with four misdemeanor counts, including unlawfully entering a restricted building and disorderly conduct, according to court filings.

Jared Wise, 51, who served as an FBI agent and a supervisory agent from 2004 to 2017, was taken into custody on Monday and released home with conditions, according to court filings...

The camera footage also captured Wise's reaction as other surrounding protesters began to attack police officers trying to defend the Capitol, the filing added. In the video, he can be heard egging them on by shouting: “Kill ‘em! Kill ‘em! Kill ‘em!”...  (Former FBI agent charged in Jan. 6 attack on U.S. Capitol (msn.com))

Of course he is described as former.  And of course, they have to look like they are part of the mob.  His punishment was to go home - with conditions - probably no chocolate ice cream or something equally dreadful.

A book published by US News and World Report (Communists and the New Left) describes how activist mobs are composed of three working groups.  One group is a small group of trained people that direct the mob. That includes people like Wise and Eps. Then there are the "street fillers," and the minutemen.  

Any trained community activist would be familiar with these techniques.

Some people seem eager to take offense.  Sometimes I talk in general terms and people think I'm talking about them.  And at other times I mention something somebody did and somebody takes offense because they thought I was being critical when I wasn't.  One time I described what I saw someone doing I wasn't being critical at all.  I saw nothing wrong with what they were doing, but they thought I was being critical.  

When you write as much as I do, somebody will occasionally be offended whether they should or not.  I can't help that.  People will read something and take it one way or another when it wasn't meant in that particular way or maybe wasn't even about them.

There have been a couple people over the many years who thought I should post whatever they wanted me to and got mad when I didn't post something they sent.  I'm not running a commercial company here.  Sometimes I mean to post something but lose it or forget.  There is a lot of material I try to keep track of, and don't always do it well.  Sometimes I don't even post everything I wanted to post for one reason or another.  Sometimes I have something timely come up and I put something else off for another time and then forget about it.

Anyhow, don't be eager to get offended.  I don't mean to offend.  I'm pretty careful about that, and it is pretty hard, but not impossible, to get on my bad side.

Divers found the remains of an underwater hospital and cemetery off coast of Key West.  The photo above shows those structures as they once existed.

A team of divers exploring the Dry Tortugas National Park, off of Key West, have discovered what are believed to be a hospital and cemetery that date back to the early 1800s.

The site is submerged around what is known as Garden Key, about 70 miles west of the southernmost point...

A interesting treasure truth.  Men travel many miles to find gold, not knowing that what they seek is to be found within.

It isn't necessarily an indicator of some huge hoard or gold mine if you find traces of gold in your drinking water - or any water for that matter.

One hundred and thirty-two natural water samples were collected from various sources and analyzed for gold by the latest techniques. Background values for gold in natural waters range from <0.001 to 0.005 ppb, and anomalous values range from 0.010 to 2.8 ppb. Waters collected from mineralized areas have a mean gold value of 0.101 ppb, whereas waters collected from unmineralized areas have a mean of 0.002 ppb. Some of the high gold values reported in the earlier literature were probably due to interferences by high salt content in the sample and/or lack of proper filter procedures...

Notice that the amount of gold found in natural water sources can be higher for a variety of reasons, Environmental mineralization and salt will do it, for example.

There have been attempts to extract gold from ocean water, although a method that is cost effective has not yet been found.

So if you are on an island and find traces of gold in the water, it would not be unusual at all.  In fact, it would be more surprising if you couldn't find any trace of gold in the water.

If you write very much, as I do, you know that writing is only half of communicating.  You can put the message out there, but then it has to be received and interpreted.  Putting the message out there is only half of it.  It also takes a well-intentioned and capable receiver.

I once received an email in response to what one reader described as a "long-winded" discourse I supposedly made about a particular artifact.  As I told the emailer, I actually said almost nothing about the artifact, which was true.  Most of the post was an excellent analysis by a blot reader - not myself - and I think the post made that clear.  The emailer evidently missed that.  I can't blame the emailer.  The blog is supposed to be easy and entertaining as well as informative.  It isn't a serious scientific journal or anything like that.  And I do make a disappointing number of simple mistakes - mostly because I try to do a lot too quickly.

While it is not so important in this blog, there are times when it is important to be clear and precise.  An election changing letter from 51 slippery intelligence Pinocchios referring to the now world-famous laptop said, “If we are right, this is Russia trying to influence how Americans vote in this election, and we believe strongly that Americans need to be aware of this.”  Why the urgency if they didn't even know?  The answer is obvious enough.  They went to great lengths to, in their own words, "influence how Americans vote in this election."  The information superhighway has turned into an oversaturated misinformation/disinformation mudpuddle leveraged by a whole-government approach to advance the down-with-America agenda. We are now in a bizarro mirror-image social media world used by the power elite to manipulate the portion of the population that exists in an emotion-over-intellect disinformation-drugged state.  Do not be deceived.  Clear thinking and reading is more important than ever but unfortunately too rare among the miseducated population of America today.  Too bad the larger population of this country is not more like the readership of this blog.

Despite digging three separate holes within feet of each other — in an area that Ms. Honders had identified by overlaying ancient maps, modern maps and a hand-drawn map from a German soldier, and marked by little red flags — they had come up empty.

The fruitless morning brought an end to a monthslong pursuit that had enticed dozens of people with shovels and metal detectors to the tiny Dutch village in the hopes of unearthing four ammunition boxes loaded with stolen jewels, gold and watches.

The modern-day gold rush was touched off in January when a scheduled release of thousands of declassified documents from the Dutch National Archives brought to light the Nazi soldier's map drawn in 1945 and purportedly marking the location of an actual treasure...

A rare stash of 1,000-year-old ironwork, which sat for 40 years in a family's basement in Norway, is now seeing the light of day after a woman discovered the hoard during some spring cleaning. 

The hoard consists of 32 iron ingots that look like small spatulas and date back to the Viking Age (A.D. 793 to 1066) or high Middle Ages (1066 to 1350). The rods are identical and weigh about 1.8 ounces (50 grams) each, prompting archeologists to think they may have been used as a form of currency and that someone probably buried them with the intention of coming back for the treasure later...

Each ingot is pierced with a hole on one end, which suggests the ingots could have been tied together in a bunch, experts added...

Monarche Butterfly
Less Than One Minute Old.

You can see that the newly emerged butterfly is still hanging on the chrysalis.  The wings haven't straightened out yet.  It will take some hours before the wings are straightened out and hardened.  Quite a process!  It goes from egg to caterpillar, which molts four times as it grows many times its original size, forms a chrysalis and then emerges as a butterfly about a week later.

The gold artefacts from the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis were found in graves with skeletons (mostly male) as well as in symbolic graves without human remains.

The Varna Gold Treasure includes over 3,000 gold artefacts categorized in 28 different types with a combined total of weight of 6.5 kilograms.

Over 5 kilograms of all gold artefacts have been found in a total of three symbolic graves plus Grave No. 43 which contains a skeleton of a man who might have been a ruler or king-priest...

I learned a couple things about dating bottles in recent years.  They are things I didn't appreciate at first.  If a bottle is embossed with some good information, you can often use that information, look it up, and find out more about the company or product and when it was used.  Sometimes, however, there isn't enough information like that embossed on the bottle, in fact sometimes the bottle might not have anhy of that type of information on it, or it might be blank, or what some people call slick.?

"Slick" is a good description of an unembossed bottle because diggers often run their fingers over a dirty bottle to feel for the presence of embossing.  I do that too, even if there is the danger of a crack or shard or barnacle or something to cutting your finger.  I think those who hunt for bottles in waterways are more apt to use that technique where mud or slime will often obscure details.

But if you can't find the product or company name on the bottle, there is usually other information that can help you out. For one thing, you might be able to find the glass company mark on the bottom of the bottle.  Then a look at the sha.org bottle marker's mark pages or some other listing can help you out.  Some glass companies operated for a short duration and others changed their mark over time.

Sometimes bottles don't have a maker's mark that you can find listed though.  Then you might be able to obtain information from certain features of the bottle itself.  

You might look for bubbles in the glass to see if it was blown.  You might look for the marks that indicate it was machine made, or the evenness and thickness of the glass.  Or is the glass turning purple from sun exposure? Or is it a modern screw-top bottle?  Using those kinds of observations can help, but it takes more knowledge or skill to use those kinds of observations.  One feature might not be enough, Below are some complicating factors.

Bottles are still blown today, so you can't go by that alone.

Many bottles that look old are reproductions.  Actually, a seasoned bottle digger or collector will often be able to quickly identify repro bottles.  They might be made to look something like an old bottle, but there can be some very obvious tell-tale signs.  Visit the hobby lobby and take a look at the many repro bottles they sell.

When hunting for information on bottles, I've recently learned that when you can't find much on the company or the product, include "advertising" in your search.  You can often find antique labels and advertising ephemera listed for sale that can provide the information you need.

An experienced bottle digger or collector will quickly be able to very quickly identify most modern bottles by seeing just a very small part of a bottle.  That very thin even glass is a quick giveaway, for example.   I'm far from an expert on bottles but have picked up a few things.  For me they provide an opportunity to hunt when I don't have time to drive to a good detecting beach, and I do enjoy finding a good old bottle with some history or mystery behind it.  And the presence of old ceramics or glass can point you to good metal detecting sites.  Broken ceramics and glass scattered on the surface can alert you to other buried objects.
