Silver in ancient Egyptian bracelets provides earliest evidence for long-distance trade between Egypt and Greece

Mastadon Tooth.

A 5,000-year-old mastodon tooth was found by a woman on a California Beach.  The foot long tooth was seen sticking out of the sand.  The woman didn't know what it was but took a photo and sent it to a museum.  When she found out what it was and returned to find it again but couldn't.  She used social media and another person who had found the tooth then donated it to a museum.

Mastodons and mammoth teeth are different.  Mastodon teeth have peaks like the one shown above for crushing wooden plants while mammoths have teeth that are ore flat for grinding grasses.

Mastodon and mammoth teeth and tusks have been found on Treasure Coast beaches.  I've posted both before.

Below is a piece of a broken mastodon tooth that was found on the Treasure Coast.  Being broken, this example shows the layers on the inside of the tooth.

And below is a section of a fossil mammoth tusk that is wrapped for conservation treatment. It was found on a Treasure Coast beach too.  This section weighs over thirty pounds.

The tropical depression in the Gulf is headed south and will not affect Treasure Coast beach conditions much this weekend.

Since the changes at MagicSeaWeed, I've been using windy.com to track weather that could affect beach conditions. In the view below you can see the circulation around the system that has become tropical storm Arlene.  A few days ago, the NHC wasn't predicting this much development.

Tropical Storm Arlene As Seen on Windy.co.

Below is the latest wind and wave data from Windy.com.

Notice the higher waves and swells listed for Monday night. The wind is shown as up to 14 knots from the northeast, and the waves at about eight feet with a seven-foot swell.  That does not last long, but should result in improved beach conditions that night.

Now the waves are only about two to three feet on the Treasure Coast.

Arlene will provide a good opportunity to gain some experience using primarily windy.com to predict beach metal detecting conditions.  I used MSW so long that it will take a little time for me to gain the same level of confidence in predictions made from windy.com.  It looks like it should work just as well or even better though.

Good hunting,
