As we move into summer Treasure Coast salvage operations get into operation while beach hunters hope for the good storm that opens up the beaches. As hurricane season approaches, I thought it would be a good time to review some of the big finds of the past. That should get your juices flowing.
First is $200,000 worth of gold coins discovered back in 2013. Some of those are shown above.

One of the most famous finds of the Treasure Coast is the famous anniversary find. It was found on the 300th anniversary of the sinking of the 1715 Fleet.
I knew of the find sooner but had to wait for the public announcement on TV before I could post it. It still ranks in the top ten all time most viewed posts of the Treasure Beaches Reports.
Here is that photo.

There have also been remarkable individual items found on the Treasure Coast.
Here is one made by the crew of the Virgalona at the Cabin Wreck site.

And here is another amazing find and story. Two parts of the same item found by the Schmitt family 25 years apart.
Here is how it was reported back then.
A truly great discovery was made this summer by a Treasure Coast salvage crew. In fact a lot of discoveries were made, but the one I want to focus on today isn't a gold coin or even a bunch of gold coins, but something more important.
25 years ago a very intricate gold hinged frame was found, or at least that is what they thought it was. This year, last month in fact, another very intricate piece of gold was found by the Schmitt family who operates the salvage vessel Booty. It appears that the new find is the back of the item that was found 25 years ago.
The item appeared to be a frame before, exciting enough by itself, but having the additional part, they now believe the item is not just a frame, but it could be a pyx. A pyx is a small, flat, clamshell type of container made of brass or other metals but lined with gold used in Catholic services...
Of course this is a very small selection of the Treasure Coast treasure finds that I have reported on over the years, but it should be enough to get you pumped up for the summer season. If you go back through the treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com you'll find many more.
Good hunting,
