John Brooks Beach Friday Afternoon. |
I took a look at a couple beaches today just to get an idea of where things stand before we get some higher surf, if we do.
John Brooks still had a big bunch of shelly summer sand on the beach front. You can see it above.

The beach front was steep and mushy.
There was one fellow metal detecting, while his wife and daughter sat remained cool in the car.

Frederick Douglass Beach is usually very much like John Brooks.
I went down to Walton Rocks just to show another type of beach.
Walton Rocks Beach Friday Afternoon. |
As you can see, Walton Rocks Beach is low and wide. It has been down for quite a few months.
A lot of the sand from higher on the beach got dragged out and is not out in front of the beach. That is why the beach looks so wide.
Some people, who don't appreciated knowing the importance of the history of a beach, are only interested in what a beach looks like now. Two beaches that look exactly the same, can be very different though. It is important how they got to the current state. For example, if this beach was lower in the past than it is now, that would be very different than if it was much higher in the past, and just got cut down.

It was near low tide when I took these photos. As low as this beach was today, it was lower in the not-too-distant past.

My mother and mother-in-law were both 96 - the same age as Queen Elizabeth. They both were always interested in the Queen. Being of the same age as the queen, they experienced many of the same historical events, including World War II. In their youth, they shared similar fears and hopes, sacrificed for the war effort and feared for their loved ones. And in the end celebrated when it was finally all over. You might say they grew up with the Queen, more than any other personality other than their immediate family, and probably longer than any of those. My wife and I watched the Queen more than we would have, always alerting our mothers to when a program about the royals was on. Our mothers weren't into channel surfing. I guess that had to do with spending their youth without TV and then having one or two channels, a TV guide and no remote. So we always had to alert them to TV programs we thought they'd like. They probably wouldn't find them on their own.
They say that power corrupts. As much as I disliked that maxim, it seems all too true these day, the Queen does not seem to be one of those. Granted, her power was more figurative or symbolic, but it was power - and privilege. Yet I can think of few humans who used their power and privilege more admirably. That is my impression.

Below you can see the current surf predictions. After looking at things, I won't be surprised if it turns out to be a smaller surf than what is currently predicted. Earl is moving away pretty fast, maybe Invest 95 will help.
