Indonesian Divers Discover Treasures From Enigmatic ‘Island of Gold’

Archaeological evidence of the Srivijaya Empire is limited, but recent finds made along the Musi River may shed light on the mysterious civilization

Local divers exploring Indonesia’s Musi have found gold rings, beads and other artifacts that may be linked to the Srivijava Empire, which controlled sea trade across large swaths of Asia between the 7th and 11th centuries C.E.

“In the last five years, extraordinary stuff has been coming up,” British maritime archaeologist Sean Kingsley, who reported on the discoveries in the autumn issue of  Wreckwatch Magazine tells the Guardian's Dalya Alberge. “Coins of all periods, gold and Buddhist statues, gems, all the kinds of things that you might read about in Sinbad the Sailor and think it was made up. It’s actually real.”

Among the discoveries are a life-size Buddhist statue covered in precious gems, temple bells, mirrors, wine jugs and flutes shaped like peacocks, reports Stephanie Pappas for Live Science...

Closer to home....

Portuguese Man O'War

If you go to the beach there is a good chance you will see some of these creatures called Portuguese Man O'War. They will be floating in the water and/or stranded on the beach.

My introduction came when I was metal detecting in the water off Fort Lauderdale years ago and the tentacles of a large one got wrapped around my leg.   It hurt, and since I didn't know what it was, it was also concerning.

I suppose that some people are more sensitive to the venom than others.  They live in colonies, so when you see one there will usually be more.  They can even sting when on the beach dead.

A wet suit can help you if you plan on being in the water when they are around.

I've heard a lot of cures for the sting.  Here are a few.

Rinse the wound with vinegar to remove any residual stingers or bits of tentacle left on the skin.
Immerse the wound in hot water at a temperature of 113 degrees F (45 degrees C) for 45 minutes.

You can use a product called Sting-No-More.  I don't know where you get it though and it is unlikely you will happen to have it handy.

Both meat tenderizer and vinegar are said to help.

Nothing on the Atlantic National Hurricane Center map right now.

We have a little breeze now.  It is from the east, but the surf remains one or two feet along the Treasure Coast.

I haven't been out for quite a while.  Not even bottle hunting, though I continue to sort and box bottles.

Good hunting,
