A few readers sent me links to the following story.

A Kentucky man got the surprise of his life while digging in his field earlier this year: a cache of over 700 coins from the American Civil War era.

The "Great Kentucky Hoard" includes hundreds of U.S. gold pieces dating to between 1840 and 1863, in addition to a handful of silver coins.  The man who discovered the hoard — whose identity and specific location have not been revealed to the public — says, "This is the most insane thing ever: Those are all $1 gold coins, $20 gold coins, $10 gold coins," as he aims his camera at the artifacts tumbling out of the dirt.

According to the Numismatic Guaranty Corp. (NGC), which certified the coins' authenticity, and GovMint where the coins were sold, 95% of the hoard is composed of gold dollars, along with 20 $10 Liberty coins and eight $20 Liberty coins. The rarest is the 1863-P $20 1-ounce gold Liberty coin. Just one of these coins can go for six figures at auction, and the Great Kentucky Hoard boasts 18 of them. NGC's website notes that the $20 Liberty coin, which circulated from 1850 to 1907, was minted by the Treasury Department after gold was discovered in California. The $20 Liberty coins in the hoard are even rarer because they do not include "In God We Trust," which was added in 1866 after the end of the Civil War...

Here are a couple links to that story.

Some think the haord was buried to protect it from John Morgan's raiders after the Civil War.

Thanks to DJ, SuperRick and William K. for sending links on that.

Any detectorist would like to find a hoard, and if you actually do some cache hunting, it will help to know something of the psychology and circumstances that cause them to be deposited.

On July 1 an unnamed man from Tennessee planned to propose to his girlfriend on the beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina...

The man and his girlfriend were taking photos along the beach, and when he reached for the ring to pop the question, he realized he had dropped it somewhere in the sand.

The man then flagged the police for help, as the department said in its post, and they even enlisted the help of a police dog named Goggles, but it was actually 15-year-old Isaiah Krekeler who located the ring...

Isaiah was a novice detectorist but had his detector on the beach and was able to find the ring.

"Witch Bottle"
Source: See LiveScience link below.

A glass bottle filled with rusted nails may not sound like much of an archaeological find. But this Civil War artifact could represent a type of talisman that was popular for warding off evil spirits: a "witch bottle."

Researchers found the bottle at a site known as Redoubt 9, a fortification built in 1861 by Confederate troops and later occupied by Union forces. Remains of the defensive structure lie on a highway median between exits 238 and 242 on Interstate 64, in York County, Virginia...

Though approximately 200 witch bottles have been found in the U.K., fewer than a dozen have turned up in the U.S., according to the WMCAR statement. The discovery of a witch bottle in a 19th-century fort offers a glimpse of traditional superstitions that may have persisted for a soldier who was far from his family, perhaps "an officer who felt especially threatened occupying hostile territory," Jones said....

Nothing there that is going to change Treasure Coast beach conditions significantly for a while.

Expect more south and west winds and hot weather.

Good hunting,
