2/9/23 Report - Old Gold Ring Found. Hoard of Iron Weapons and Artifacts. Nailing It Down.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of the Treasure Beaches Report.

Medieval Gold Ring Found.

The ring is decorated with opposing faces, making it extremely unusual. Only a few early medieval gold rings have been found in Poland and they are devoid of ornamentation or have simple geometric patterns.

That makes the latest find “unique”, says Jerzy Trzebiński from the castle museum’s archaeology department. “This is the only example in which human images (or figural ones in general) are depicted on an early medieval ring from Poland.”

He also notes that the item contains no references to Christianity (which had begun to be  established in Poland in the 10th century) and suggests that the two faces could represent Janus, the two-faced Roman God.

Given that the form of the ring is typical for that period in Poland, Trzebiński believes it was probably a local product and could have belonged to a member of the elites under the Piasts, Poland’s first ruling dynasty from when the state was established in the 10th century until the 14th century...

A Pile of Iron Finds.

Iron spearheads, two battle axes and a wood-cutting axe are among the items discovered near Hrubieszów by treasure hunters. The weapons most likely come from Roman times and were used by warriors from barbarian tribes...

Due to the very strong corrosion covering the metal, additionally mixed with sand and mud, it was difficult to determine what these objects were,’ he says...

The discovery consists of a dozen or so items, including: iron spearheads (25.5 cm to 34.5 cm long, with the width of the leafy blade between 5 cm and 6.5 cm); two iron battle axes (one 23.5 cm long and 7 cm high, the other slightly smaller, 19 cm long and 5 cm high); one shaft-hole axe (or carpenter axe - this will most likely be determined only after conservation); and three items whose identification is currently very difficult (also requiring conservation).

He adds that everything indicates that someone deliberately collected these elements, packed them in a bag or another organic container (no trace of which has been preserved) and then threw them into the swamp...

The place where the weapons were discovered will be re-examined in spring, under more favourable weather conditions...

One of the most exciting and frustrating things about the world is how hard it is to nail down concrete facts about how it works. It's not unheard of for a supposed fact to be agreed upon within the scientific community for years, only for new evidence to suddenly come out of nowhere that throws it all into question.

And as far as a new study is concerned, one amazing discovery caused precisely that kind of paradigm shift. Thanks to only a few new samples, the long-held assumptions of how humans came to replace neanderthals on this planet could now need a fundamental rewrite. Read on to learn more...

The source article for those two paragraphs isn't very good, but the two paragraphs excerpted above are worth considering.  Here is the link.  Arrowhead Discovery Reveals Human Achievements Centuries Before They Were Thought To Happen (msn.com)

There is too much hype on the internet.  Almost every discovery is said to "rewrite the history books," or at least threaten to.   Otherwise, it represents a paradigm shift, turns the world upside down or is simply amazing.  I can do with out all that.

But the first paragraph is true. It can be difficult and frustrating trying to nail down the facts.  I've provided many examples of what I call mystery finds, some of which take years to figure out, and some will remain mysteries.

Quickly nailing something down usually results in it prying it up later.

If you watch some TV shows about treasure, every belongs to a treasure ship, every lock goes to a treasure chest, and every chain was used by a treasure ship to unload treasure.  It gets pretty silly.

Just after midnight last night we had a decent negative tide.

The surf will be between three to six feet for the next several days.

Good hunting,
