8/11/21 Report - Rare 1715 Eight-Escudo Royal Being Auctioned. One New Modern Gold Find. Tropical Storm Fred.

1715 Mexican Royal Being Auctioned.

This 1715 Royal Mexican 8 escudos is being offered by Heritage at the ANA World Coin Auction.

While surrounding dates for this type are known to exist in finer technical states, this becomes almost a moot point when considering the rarity of the particular selection presented here. Calicó recorded only one example of this “large rosettes” variety known in his book La Onza as of 2004 (from different dies), while the date itself was entirely missing from Norweb, Gerber, Karon, Millennia, and Bowers and Ruddy’s 1977 sale of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet.

Interestingly, a different example of this date is now plated in the 2019 edition of Numismática Española, with a distinctive flan flaw on the reverse. As such this coin is quite possibly only the third known example, and a numismatic centerpiece of the entire Mexican colonial series worthy of the utmost place of prominence in its future owner’s cabinet.

Here is the link for more about that.

Thanks to JamminJack for alerting me to that article.

I should add, though, that there was actually a 1715 Mexico 8-escudo offered in the 1977 Bowers and Ruddy auction (p. 166 of the catalog), however it was not a royal and was not comparable to this coin.

Haven't been to the beach for quite a while, but got a chance to stop at the beach yesterday while on my way to another appointment.  Fortunately I had my detector along and had time to get in a little detecting.

Now we have a tropical storm that looks like it will most likely moving over the Keys.  We are still in the cone though, so we'll have to keep watching to see exactly where it goes.

It looks like tropical storm Fred, will remain a storm as it crosses the Keys and moves into the Gulf.   If the track is close to the center of the projected current projected cone and if the development of the storm stays the same,  the Treasure Coast won't get much from the storm.

It looks to me like we'll get mostly south winds from it.  Below is an image from Ventusky.com that shows that as Fred passes to the west of Florida, we'll be getting southeast winds.

MagicSeaWeed.com shows us getting up to a four foot surf from Fred by Sunday.

Then the surf will quickly return to around two or three feet.

Of course, all of that is subject to change, but I don't expect any big changes.

I'd like to see some good north winds and a bigger surf on the Treasure Coast, but the hurricane season is still young, and there is another low pressure area following Fred.  We'll see how that develops.

If Fred does what it looks like he will, I'll still be glad to get some southeast wind swells on the river.  There is one spot that is pretty eroded, and looks promising.  I'd like to see it get cut back a little more.

Watch for continuing updates.

Happy hunting,
