5/9/22 Report - Rings With Mounted Treasure Coins. Passion Flower and Spanish Explorers. Big Surf Coming.

Ring With Mounted 2-Escudo

I've been talking about finds that stick out in some way.  They are the kind of thing that is remembered for a long time.  This one was found on a birthday weekend (the same birthday weekend when a gold ring bearing a American gold eagle coin was found), which is enough to make it memorable, but anytime you find a gold coin is memorable, especially one that is hundreds of years old.  Doubling up with two different kinds of gold coins on a birthday weekend pretty much cements it.

You see a lot of mounted 1715 Fleet and coin rings these days.  It seems to me they are much more common than they used to be.  The Sedwick auctions offer a lot of them.  And you can find a lot of them on the Fisher web site too.

Correction added later:  The above photo shows the wrong ring.  It looks like it probably contains a recreation coin.

Passion Flower Blossom.

Passion flowers get their name from early Spanish explorers who saw symbols of the crucifixion in the complex flowers. The religious zeal of these people is well-documented, but their vision in regards to these flowers is difficult to see. nevertheless, the Passifloraceae means "Flower of the Passion" or "Flower of the Cross."...

You can find these growing wild in some places in Florida.  They are among the most fancy flowers youwill ever find.  Some produce egg-size fruit, but most varieties are smaller.

Here is the link for more about passion flowers.

Looks like we might have a big surf Wednesday.  The tides are still very flat though.

Good hunting,
