Above is an illustration from a study of ship and boat building nails from the iron age to the medieval period.
As you can see it categorizes nails by head, shaft and apex. It also shows how both nails and roves were manufactured and the relation between types and the size of ships they were used on. Also included is a good bibliography.
The title is "Iron nails in iron age and medieval shipbuilding."
The second session of the current Sedwick treasure auction offers a large number of reales, beginning with quite a few Charles and Joanna "Late Series" coins. That is followed by a variety of other reales, including a few lots of twenty or so half reales. I noticed at least one denomination set, which I believe was from Bolivia. This session presents a lot of monogramed half reales, as well ss other denominations.

The wire wrapped sword and book mystery item I posted yesterday has been identified. John H. found a listing for one on eBay. The description reads as follows.
Antique Sword Flower Locket Scarf Pin Gold Plated wrapped wire. The only mark I see is inside the little floral locket "Sterling." I used the acid scratch test on the different components and the only part that tested negative for sterling silver was the sword pin part. Locket opens and closes easily and would hold two photos. I see no gold plating on the chain and the gold plating shows some wear and tarnish over the whole piece.
I would not have guessed that it was gold plated silver. I'll have to look at that closer to see if that is accurate. If so, it appears that the plating has been worn off.
Warren D. Warren D. pointed out the religious significance of the Bible and the sword.
Thanks guys.
When I get the courage, I'm going to try to open the locket.
John H. also says he is making progress on the message in the bottle mystery that I posted a few weeks ago.

Seems like we got the first cold front of the season that you can actually feel. It is that time of year.
The wind coming in from the northwest this morning.
The surf is small, but we are still having some pretty big tides.
