10/17/23 - A Great App for Detectorists and Treasure Hunters. WW II Catapult Uncovered. Star Wars Prop Worth Milliions.

Written by the Treasureguide for the exclusive use of the Treasure Beaches Report.

Archaeologists in England have excavated an experimental catapult designed to launch World War II bomber planes into the air.

The catapult, called the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) Mark III Catapult and located in Oxfordshire in southeastern England, was engineered to save warplane fuel and create shorter runways than typical airfields, according to the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).

But the prototype, built between 1938 and 1940, was never used. The device was later buried, and a regular runway was built over it in 1941. However, its design helped pave the way for other catapult systems, including the 1941 catapult aircraft merchant (CAM) ship that could launch warplanes from ships, according to an Oct. 9 statement released by MOLA...

  • An X-Wing prop used for the original "Star Wars" movie was discovered in a garage in November.
  • Friends of Oscar-nominated visual effects artist Greg Jein found the prop after he died.
  • It was put on auction, and sold on Sunday for $3.13 million...

I learned about this research tool probably a year or more ago and was always going to tell you about it, by life got in the way and I never got around to it until today.

The app I am talking about is Google Lens, which was used by John H. to find a picture of the Sword and locket mystery item I posted a couple of days ago.

Using an Android device, take a picture and search the web for the picture.  On your computer, capture a picture and use it to search the web.

Google Lens essentially lets you do Google Searches by simply pointing your camera at things. What it can do with what it sees is pretty amazing. Google Lens can tell you a lot more than just what you're looking at.

Got a math equation that you can't figure out? Don't bother typing the whole thing into your calculator--- point Google Lens at it.  See some text in the real world that you don't feel like manually typing? Snap a photo and let Google Lens copy it for you.   Find a weird bug in your backyard that you're not sure about?Google Lens can identify it for you.

These are just some of the simple things you can do with Google Lens. It can also read text from the real world outload, translate text, search the web for an image you found, and tell you where to buy something you see out in the world...

As I said, John H. used Google Lens to find a photo of the mystery item I posted.  It can be a very useful research tool for detectorists and treasure hunters.

Here is the link to get you started.

The weather finally got a lot more comfortable, and the beach doesn't feel like a sweat box.   We finally got a

real cool front.

The wind is from the north, and we have a big high tide coming up this morning, but the surf isn't big at all.
