1/2/23 Report - Fines and Jail Time For Standing or Walking on Dunes as Flagler Beach Erodes. Great Whites Arriving.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of the Treasure Beaches Report.

Read what it says below the above photo.  One resident "found a large chunk of the dune had collapsed... The damage was done by people."  Really?!

Flagler Beach Police "announced they would monitor the sand dunes since people had been seen standing and walking" on them (See photo and text immediately above.)

It should be noticed that any dunes on Flagler Beach are the result of recent renourishment projects.

Below is another clip from the same video that presumably shows the area of Flagler Beach being discussed.  I believe this area was renourished about three years ago.

Here is another article on this viral topic.

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. - Flagler Beach Police announced they would monitor the sand dunes since people had been seen standing and walking on them.

"It’s absolutely unbelievable that it's 2024 and the trampling of the sea dunes still occurs." a department representative wrote in a Facebook post. "The reality is, it's either ignorance or some people just don’t care."

At the end of the statement, they said they would monitor the 6+ mile stretch of dunes for violators.

They urge people to use the wooden walkovers instead, which are spread along the shore. The area currently has an issue with erosion of the dunes caused by the weather. The problem has resulted in several emergencies near or A1A dune fixes by FDOT over the past year.

"Just from Mother Nature, you can see [the dunes are] already been pushed back," Stephen Lapierre said. "Adding people into the mix is not a good situation at all."

At least they acknowledge natural causes of erosion instead of blaming the erosion on people walking across the dunes.  One of the articles defines the dunes as starting at the high water line and says people should not be on the beach behind the high water line.   Hmmm.

In one of the reports an "informant" was said to have told police they knew the damage (erosion?) was done by people because they saw footprints.  She took photos of the footprints and the polizei would try to find out who did it.

Here is some more text from one of the reports.

Flagler Beach police are warning people to stay off dunes after a "trampling" incident damaged one on Saturday, according to a Facebook post from the police department.

Police received a report and photos of dune damage in the northern part of the city near Java Joint Beachside Grill at 2201 N. Ocean Shore Blvd. In response, police plan to monitor the city's more than 6 miles of sea dunes.

Koch said she knows the damage was done by people because there are footprints all through the area.

Let me be clear that I (TreasureGuide) am not telling people to walk over the dunes or damage the vegetation.  Quite the contrary.  I am saying to use beach accesses and walkovers.  However, to confuse natural erosion of ineffectively renourished beaches with  dune damage caused by people walking or standing on the frequently renourished dunes which constantly erodes, confuses the issue and does not help find effective solutions.

Defining the dunes as the area behind the high water mark on many beaches would eliminate access to the largest part of the beach.  And on Flagler beach, the pictures show the cut, which it seems they were using as the foot of the dune, in front of a lot of renourishment sand while the planted sea oats were way behind that.  That sand was just dumped there in recent years and in about six months could easily be completely washed away again, but, in any case, is scheduled for renourishment again. A Flagler Beach renourishment program is scheduled for July 2024, so you can rest assured that the bulldozers will be removing the damaging footprints.  Which do you think would be more damaging - footprints or bulldozer tracks.

The internet, rather than becoming an information superhighway has become a virtual Tower of Babel.

Below is a Bing AI response that appeared on my screen.

"What part of the stomach does a bison eat?"

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I don't know which, that kind of thing from AI articles isn't rare.

Hmmm.  That Bing AI output sounded suspiciously like Joe.

Between the AI generated text and the state of modern journalism the internet, intentionally or not, creates a cloud of chaos and confusion, which like a magicians puff of smoke, provides cover for the radical transformation of America promised by President O.

Great white sharks are heading south, and a massive 1,437-pounder has been spotted in the waters off Florida’s east coast...

Breton, a 13.5-foot-long great white, pinged after surfacing near St. Augustine at about 5:17 AM EST on Saturday, according to OSEARCH.

I went for a little bottle hunt on 1/1 with not much success. I did find a painted label SunKist bottle with much of the blue label gone and a tiny brown bottle which I haven't researched yet.

No big surf predicted for the first week of January.

Good hunting,
