12/18/20 Report - Good North Wind and Swells Friday. Modern Being Found. Prospecting Indoors.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

More Modern 14K Found.

You probably noticed the wind shift.  The wind was coming from the north most of the day.  I suspect there is some erosion occurring.  I hope to be able to check before long.

We are getting good high tides, but the surf is not big.  I'd expect the new erosion, wherever it occurs, to be more on the front of the beach.  Even though the surf is supposed to be only around two or three feet, the primary swell has a good north angle to it.

Freeport McMoran (FCX) is a mining company headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.  The common stock for the company was around $5.50 per common share in March, but is now over $24.00 per share.  While FCX mines various metals, copper is now their biggest focus.  Copper prices are increasing for several reasons, one of which is the incoming administration and the use of copper for the new "green" energy technologies.  However FCX just sold a large copper property in the Congo to China, and got lower prices on copper smelting.  China is expanding its access to natural resources world-wide and is a leader in copper smelting.  Smelting costs for FCX are also low now.

Here are a few interesting statements about gold that I found on a gold refiner web site.

  • According to estimates, only 152,000 metric tons of gold has ever been mined – only enough to fill 60 tractor trailers.
  • For comparison, 907 million metric tons of iron are mined every year – 6,000 times the total amount of all the gold produced in history.
  • More than 90% of the world’s refined gold has been mined since the Gold Rush of 1848.
  • The vast majority of all gold mined becomes jewelry: 78% jewelry. 12% is used in medical applications, dental work and electronics. Only 10% is used in finance.
  • One ounce of gold can be beaten into a 100 square foot sheet.

Detectorists generally don't hunt indoors, but good things can be found in abandoned shacks or buildings if you are lucky enough to obtain legal access.  I've been fortunate to be able to do a little hunting of that.

One web site listed the following equipment as helpful for indoor hunting.

  • A magnifying glass, so you can get a close enough look to see bits of gold that are mixed in with sand, dust, and other material.
  • A small high-intensity flashlight, so you can see behind machinery, underneath floorboards, and in other small places. Don’t forget a supply of extra batteries too.
  • A pair of sharp needle-nosed tweezers, so you can remove any gold nuggets or smaller bits from surrounding material.
  • A small ball-shaped wire brush, so you can take samples from sink traps, drains and pipes.
  • A square wire brush, so you can collect samples of material that has accumulated on the bottoms and sides of sinks and other surfaces.
  • A small claw hammer and flat crowbar, so you can remove floor boards and panels and gather samples from underneath.
  • A small gold testing kit, so you can run some preliminary tests.
  • Plastic screw-top bottles and jars, so you can safely store the samples you have gathered.
  • A permanent black felt marker, so you can label each sample you take.
  • A small whiskbroom and pan, so you can sweep up quantities of sand and dust from the floor.
  • A small handheld vacuum with a hose, so you can gather samples from hard-to-reach places behind grinders, lathes and milling machines.
  • A small first-aid kit, so you can immediately attend to any splinters or scrapes . . . and get right back to hunting.

This morning some sand was getting moved.  Here is a photo DJ sent me at about 11:30 AM.

Looks like the swells won't be so much from the north tomorrow.  Too bad!

Did you ever hear about the Walabot Wall Scanner?

A see-through phone? While incredible technology like this might be in the making, inventors have yet to come up with a way to give your phone real X-ray vision. Walabot DIY comes close, though, letting you see inside walls, and helping to prevent costly or dangerous slip-ups. Here’s how it works.

If you’re imagining a tool or app that gives you near total X-ray vision, you’ll be thrilled to discover Walabot DIY. This cutting-edge tool works with a dedicated app and an Android phone running version 5 or higher. Once installed, it lets you see inside walls made from common building materials including drywall and concrete, penetrating through insulation up to four inches deep. With the Walabot DIY in-hand, there’s no doubt about the location of important components such as pipes, electric wires, cables, and studs.

X-rays come with some well-known radiation hazards, so Walabot DIY’s inventors opted for something a whole lot safer. This device uses radio frequency (RF) technology to detect objects inside walls. The readout can be easily viewed on your now “see-through phone’s” screen.

It seems like that might be a handy device for checking old buildings.  I'll try to learn more about that.
