COSTA MESA, CA
.- Stack's Bowers Galleries will present at public auction the finest known 1822 half eagle, the D. Brent Pogue Collection coin. It is a legendary American treasure, the only example in private hands of what is acknowledged as the key to a collection of American gold coins. This exceptional coin will be featured in the firm’s March 23-26, 2021 auction in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There are only three known specimens of the 1822 half eagle. Certified as AU-50 by PCGS, the Pogue coin is the finest of the three. As for opportunities to purchase an example of this date, they are just as rare. There have been only two occasions in American numismatic history in which an 1822 half eagle has sold at auction! They were:

In 1906 at the H.P. Smith Collection Sale.

In 1982 at our sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg Gold Coin Collection Sale.

I received this email from DJ.

Saw the movie “The Dig” about a anglo-saxon era ship and amazing artifacts found in 1939 England. It showed the struggles of the main character and while sentimental, was pretty good. This link has the Smithsonian telling the real story.

Here is a brief excerpt from the Smithsonian Magazine article that you will probably want to read.

Over the course of several excavations in 1938 and 1939, Brown and the archaeological team found 263 objects buried in the central chamber of the enormous Anglo-Saxon ship. Iron rivets, identified as being part of the seafaring vessel, was the first clue that alerted the archaeologist of the huge ship buried on the site, according to Brunning.

As the archaeologists dug deeper, they found themselves stunned by the scale, quality and sheer diversity of the trove. Among the artifacts unearthed were fine feasting vessels, deluxe hanging bowls, silverware from Byzantium, luxurious textiles and gold dress accessories set with Sri Lankan garnets.

The grave’s burial chamber was laden with weapons and high-quality military equipment. A shield found inside is believed to have been a diplomatic gift from Scandinavia; shoulder clasps appear to be modeled on those worn by Roman emperors, suggesting the armor’s owner drew from different cultures and power bases to assert his own authority...

And here is the link for the rest of the article.

Thanks DJ.

Retesting of ancient teeth found in China shows they are 16,000 years old—not 120,000.

That is a big difference. Science isn't always right. And then you have people claiming something is scientific when it isn't.  We've seen that a lot lately in regard to Covid.

Here is the link if for the rest of the article on testing the age of old things - in this case teeth.

I've long been skeptical of some of the methods that are used and in some cases very much doubt the conclusions.

Nothing but two or three foot surf is predicted for the next week.  Overall Treasure Coast beach conditions have not been good so far this year.  It is especially disappointing after some of the good detecting we had at the end of last year.

Happy hunting,
