Bags of Gold Coins Found in Piano

Amid the hammers and strings of a run-of-the-mill upright piano at a Shropshire college, a local piano tuner happened upon a rather large stash of treasure in a remarkable discovery a few years back.

More than 900 gold sovereigns were found inside a Broadwood, that had been donated to the school in 2016 by a couple who were downsizing their home and had no idea of what had been sitting under the roof.

The following year, piano technician Martin Backhouse was hired to tune the 100-year-old instrument at Bishop’s Castle community college in Shropshire.

When he opened it up, Backhouse discovered hundreds upon hundreds of coins, carefully concealed in seven cloth packets and a leather drawstring purse.

They were later found to date from 1847 to 1915 and, numbering 633 full sovereigns and 280 half sovereigns, were deemed the largest stash of its kind...

Thanks to SuperRick for that link.

I always like to look around old buildings and man-made structures.  I think it is one of the most interesting types of treasure hunting.  Of course the difficulty is getting permission.

Here is an area I plan to detect after I get it more cleared out.

It was a real jungle with tons tangled vines and briars.

Of course I hoped it had something good in it, but it didn't.

Below is some of what I got cleared.

---

I got word that a couple old Spanish coins were found in the Keys by an alert detectorist where some construction was going on and sand was moved.

Coins will occasionally be uncovered or brought in during beach renourishment.  It is good to find out where the sand is coming from.

I think some of the older and better finds of last year were a few decades ago moved by a large construction project.

I went for a little walk this morning.  I was going to buy one, but found one that will do nicely.  I always rather find something than buy it.  Unfortunately it was the best find of the walk.

I found just the neck and top of what would have been a large cork-top bottle.

Also saw this dead turtle.

Small Dead Sea Turtle.

The tides are pretty flat now, as is the surf.

Hopefully we'll get the bigger surf that is predicted for Sunday.  That is something hopeful.  I don't have a lot of confidence that we will actually get that though.  Those one day bumps often don't work out.
