(NEWSER) – Experts may be close to identifying the remains of a legendary pirate whos e treasure-filled ship went down off the coast of Cape Cod 300 years ago. At least six skeletons were pulled recently from the Whydah Gally and are now being examined by the man who in 1984 discovered the wreck: Barry Clifford of the Whydah Pirate Museum. Captain Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy plundered dozens of ships along the US coast, with Forbves in 2008 estimating his take at $120 million in 2008 dollars; it declared him the most successful pirate in history. Experts thought they'd found the Englishman, one of 40 sailors whose bodies were never found, in 2018 when a bone was located in a hardened mass of sand and rock at the wreck. But it belonged to a man of Eastern Mediterranean origins, WGN reports...

DJ was on the beaches Saturday afternoon and sent in this report and photo.
Recently Renourished Ambersands Saturday. Photo by DJ. |
Here is what DJ had to say regarding Ambersands, first, and also some of the other beaches.
Looks like some of the renourishment sand has been washed out leaving an old whiter ledge high up but there’s a lot of soft sand on the beach front.
Thought I’d go to Wabasso today at 11 AM but could not find a parking spot. I did see big roadsigns saying Wabasso Beach Park would close February 17 for a couple of months. Also Golden Sands and treasure Shores are still closed. Did not go by Seagrape so I’m not sure if they’re working on that or waiting till they pump sand. Time to dust off some of your tips from the past on where to detect.
Thanks DJ.---
One of the long rumored wreck sites west of A1A has produced a few minor shipwreck items including a spike what looks like a heavily corroded fractional reale.

Don't expect any big change in beach conditions real soon. It looks like the surf will remain in the two to three foot range for several days.
Happy hunting,
