Jupiter Inlet Beach Thursday. Photo by Joe D. |
Joe D. visited some Jupiter area beaches Thursday. He sent some beach photos along with the following message. First time out in several weeks to detect, for various reasons! Conditions here are poor even though there was a lot of beach traffic since then! Like the majority of us, I prevented a beachgoer from a trip to the local ER! See if you can spot the offending item!🗡 And the usual amount of trash expected! Few good targets!
Notice the successive layers of renuorishment sand in one picture! All will be gone in one good storm! What a waste! 👍👍
I haven't detected Jupiter for several years. The last time I remember driving down to Jupiter, the bank was washing out, and I found the half-reale shown below.
Half Reale From Jupiter Beach. |
As you can see, it is in good condition with sharp details. I think that is because it remained hidden in the dunes until it washed out the same day I found it. I was in rushing water up to my thighs. The water was bouncing off the bank, making it difficult to stand, let alone metal detect.
Since that time that beach has undergone many renourishments and many changes. It was changed a lot after the 2004 hurricanes and is very different from the days when the parking lot was an unpaved area under the trees.
Here is the junk Joe picked up. Notice the knife blade and other sharp objects.

Thanks for picking up that junk Joe.

The best guess seems to be that it is a lead seal. Here are some examples from A Guide to Artifacts of Colonial America, by Noel Hume.
A couple days ago Jason T. submitted the mystery item shown below. There were additional views shown in the original post.

Here examples can be found on Pinterest.
The next task is to work at deciphering the marks on the item. From just the photo, it looks like there are some letters that can almost be made out.

John B. sent in photos of this find, which appears to be a mounted Ancient Greek coin. He mentioned that it could be a fake or replica.

The metal doesn't look right to me, but I told John to visit the Greek and Roman coin forum on coincommunity.com.
You can find plenty of images of similar coins online by searching Pegasus Greek coin.

It looks like Tropical Cyclone Three will land around Louisiana.

Tropical Cyclone Three won't affect us much, but it is the time of year when you should keep track of changing tropical weather events.
We are supposed to have a continuing small surf on the Treasure Coast for several days yet.
Happy hunting,
