---Madrid, Spain—On June 27, the U.S. numismatic firm Sedwick & Associates, LLC had the honor of representing the winning bid for the 1715 Mexican 8 Escudos “royal” (galano) from the Fernando Segarra collection at the Jesus Vico auction in Madrid. Graded NGC MS 68, the coin fetched a world record price of 756,000 Euros (over $800,000 in US dollars) (including commission), the highest ever paid for a Spanish colonial or Latin American coin. Bidding quickly escalated from 250,000 to 600,000 Euros, culminating in a nail-biting two-party fight.

“We were thrilled to come out ahead,” said company president and founder, Daniel Frank Sedwick.

The coin is the finest of six special presentation pieces known for 1715, and fewer than 50 known in all dates (1695-1732), mostly from the Spanish 1715 Fleet sunk off the Florida coast. It is the only one graded MS 68 by NGC, the highest grade for any 8 escudos.

The Vico sale kicked off the oustanding MADRID 2024 Evento Numismático Internacional, a new coin show and conference in Madrid, Spain (spanish press release). —We'd also like to announce that our company name has changed to Sedwick & Associates, LLC to better represent our market position and future growth.

Latest Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook Calls For Even More Storms, CSU Forecasters Say.

Except for Beryl, this hurricane season has been very quiet, which is normal for July.  Peak hurricane season isn't until August/September.

It seems the Saharan dust could also be preventing storm development.

I keep being impressed by the usefulness of a good magnet.  Every detectorists should have one or two.

I was hunting a little target and just couldn't see it,  I ran my strong magnet over the ground and picked it up  It was a little rusted piece that looked just like the dirt.  Couldn't see it for anything.  But the magnet picked it up in a hurry.

Just a few days ago I was talking about using a magnet to separate ferrous coins.  You can test any object with a magnet a very useful tool.

A long time ago I made a YouTube video to show how to use a long-handled magnet to pick up junk when metal detecting.

Here is a link.
