Cone for Hurricane Beryl.Beryl i nhc.noaa.gov. |
This time of year every year beach detectorists watch for hurricanes. Other storms will work can help us just as much though. The legendary Thanksgiving Storm of 1984 really tore up the beaches and resulted in great finds for Treasure Coast detectorists, but it was not a hurricane. I've talked about that before. It stayed off the coast sending waves from the northeast for days. Of course hurricanes such as Francis and Jeanne produced a lot of treasure finds, but other hurricanes did not.
I did one post on the Thanksgiving Storm or 1984 and it presented the details of what made that storm (not hurricane) so effective. It is a must read.
Beryl is the hurricane we are watching now, and it looks like it won't affect us much - at least not unless it does something unexpected.
It does look like it could wash out some of the very old cons of Padre Island, which is a National Park. Padre Island National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)
Here is an article that gives a lot of the treasure history of Padre Island. I'm not sure of all the accuracy of all details but it is a decent starter.
On the Treasure Caost the surf remains small and will remain that way for days, according to SurfGuru.com.

A couple weeks ago, I think it was, I showed an old rusted horseshoe I found. Now I found something related - hand forged nippers.
The color of the photo is all wrong. The nippers are black even after all the cleaning.
I really lightened up the photo and the coloring is not right now, but I wanted the photo to show the details. Note especially, the head of the rivet. Both heads of the rivet. show the hammer marks.

For me, it is a thing of beauty because it shows how things were made back in the day.
If you can provide anymore info on this item, please do. It is a very new find that I photographed shortly after finding it and cleaning it up a little.
Below is a photo showing the more correct coloring.

Keep watching the tropics. They have become more active.
Good hunting,
