This encrusted sword hilt was found last month on the Atocha site.  It is now in the conservation lab.

It seems that whenever you conduct research you find more than you ever expected.  It takes you down different paths and to information you never knew to look for.  I was recently looking up one thing and found this web site that gives the history of rings.  It might help you narrow down the date of some of your finds.  I often get questions about silver rings and how old they might be.

One of the more fascinating mysteries for me is the question about silver rings on the 1715 Fleet wrecks.  One of the most notable salvagers said that a silver ring was never found on a 1715 wreck.  That particular salvager is beyond question one of the most knowledgable and experienced of all, so I take the statement very seriously, but it makes me wonder about all of the apparently very old silver rings found on the 1715 wreck beaches.  They seem plentiful, yet the date can not in most cases be determined accurately.   We know that silver rings come from Spanish colonial archaeological sites, so why the apparent lack of silver rings on the wrecks?  And why are so many found on the wreck beaches?  I have some ideas about that, but they are nothing more than ideas.  I've posted those ideas before, but am no closer to having any proof.

Anyhow, if you are interested in determining the date of a found ring, you might find the following site useful.  It presents a history of ancient rings.

Here is the link.

And here is a link to an extensive timeline for jewelry.

You'll find a lot of useful detail in that one.  White gold was developed in 1917, for example.

Here is a little puzzle.  It is an inscription on a gold ring of unknown date.

14410  CS  V.C.A.

That is how I make out the fancy script.  I'll take a good photo of that inscription the next time I get a chance.

It would seem the V. C. A. might be someone's initials, but I don't know what the number or CS might be.  Any ideas?

Now that looks interesting!  Not just one day of peak surf, but two - and not decreasing on the second day.

I hope that holds.  I'd really like to see a nine foot surf.  That could be fun.

Happy hunting,
