Bronze Age Spearhead Found On Beach by Detectorist.

A bronze age spear head was found on a beach by a detectorist.

It was uncovered on the beach at Gorey last August by metal detectorist Jay Cornick, who took it to Jersey Heritage to be recorded.

He admits he didn't know what it was at first.

"I just thought that it was a modern fishing spear or something. It was only later on when I looked at it a bit more, it looked like it was a bit older and maybe something related to the castle. I didn't know at the time...

The carbon dating carried out by York Archaeological Trust confirmed the wooden haft dates from between 1207 BC and 1004 BC...

The style of spear head is known as Tréboul after a site in Brittany but this example is so large and delicate that Mr Mahrer says it is possible it was made for ceremonial use. It is thought it survived in such good condition because it was protected from the air by the black sand...

We had a rare event in late October of 2020.  I've referred to it several times before.

If you remember, we had some big high tides and also some very high surf back then.  At one beach the high water cut into the back dunes, which normally presents a high cliff that seldom gets hit by the water.  Usually the water doesn't get high enough to do that, but it had happened at least once and maybe more in the past decade.

But not only was the level of the high water rare, but the distribution of old finds was rare too.
It is not often you get old finds distributed over the entire beach.  Not only did very old finds fall out of the back dunes where they had been stored for decades, but old finds came from the entire beach, all the way from the foot of the dune face down to the water, and I don't doubt there were some in the shallow water as well.

Digging into the mid and front beach revealed an older layer of sand that I don't recall having previously seen before at that location, although it isn't a spot where I have spent a huge amount of time detecting.

There were also old targets at the newly exposed rocks in the low tide area at the front of the beach.  I do not recall having seen the rocks exposed at that location before.  Usually there is a lot of sand there.  I haven't seen the rocks exposed there since that time either.

I don't think I  have ever previously seen an entire beach produce so many old items so uniformly from the dune face down to the water.

I keep coming back to that period of time because it was a very rare event.

Surf Predictions from MagicSeaWeed.com.

I was glad to see a second day of 5 - 8 foot surf predicted.  The prediction is too far away to provide a lot of confidence, but a second day of high surf makes it a little more likely to stick.  Those one day predicted bumps very often disappear rather than happening.

The tides are getting better now too.  We are having some good negative tides.

2020 has been so slow, I'm sure everybody is just itching for some good rough water.

Happy hunting,
