Padlock From Metal Detecting Site That Produced Many Railroad Related Finds.

Padlocks are not frequent finds, but neither are they extremely rare.  I've posted some found by myself as well as other detectorists.  The one shown above is one I found last summer; I think it was.  It has part of a chain attached.  I found the key to it sometime later.  If you let your imagination run you might think of a train robbery, but it just as well could be from a gate or something else.

It seems that the first thing that comes to mind when a detectorist finds a padlock is a treasure chest.  Of course, padlocks are used for many other things.

Of the padlocks I've found, most were corroded to some extent, but one I found seemed to be made of bronze and although older was still in great condition.

On the extreme is the one shown below.  It was my most recent padlock find.    It is shown as it looked. after some cleaning.

You can find more about both of those by entering "padlock" into the search box on this blog.

Here are a couple that were found by others.  I posted them back in the original treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

They may or may not be from treasure chests, but whatever they were used for, padlocks make nice collectibles.

I found a great web site for researching antique padlocks.

The purpose of the site "is to be a virtual repository to preserve the history of Padlocks and Locking Devices, and to rediscover the history which has been lost. From the technical underpinnings of the earliest locking device, to the most sophisticated modern device, draws a roadmap of historical significance."

You should check it out.  It provides and extensive list of padlocks and photos, going back to ancient times.

The biggest news for me today is the increasing activity in the Atlantic. Still, it doesn't like we are going to see much change in beach conditions for a while.

As you can see below, next Tuesday or Wednesday, we are still not seeing a good change in wind direction.
