John Brooks Beach Thursday Afternoon. |
I visited a couple beaches this afternoon. Immediately abovem and below is what I saw at John Brooks Beach.

That is what I expected to see. A soft interrupted slope and a lot of sand.

A lot of snowbirds are in town. I saw a lot of out-of-state license plates and a couple detectorist. One fellow from Minnesota found a lot of junk on the beach and commented on people being slobs.

Many people focus on one type of treasure. Maybe they seek coins, or gold jewelry, or Spanish shipwreck treasure, or maybe even fossils, bottles or arrowheads. Yesterday I showed a nice variety of finds made by Christopher N. and I pointed out one button in the photo that I thought looked interesting, but I wasn't sure what it was from just looking at the photo. Joe R. pointed out that in the photo it is upside down. He identified it as a South Carolina militia button, and sent a photo of one of his own (below).

I found a great photo of an excellent example of one for sale online (shown above). Notice the asking price - $250. I wanted you to see that buttons can be valuable too - especially military buttons that are in such great shape.
You might not realize the possible value of other types of finds if it isn't something you normally pay attention to. Of course the same factors affect values no matter what the type of treasure you are talking about. Rarity, condition, and popularity as a collectible are some of the most important.
Here is a good web site for browsing buttons.

Today I wanted to list the many benefits of metal detecting/treasure hunting in general terms.
- Entertainment (we just like to do it.)
- Exercise (physical and mental including health benefits)
- Discover and recover historic artifacts
- Recover and return lost personal items
- Return coins to circulation
- Recover other metals and materials
- Education through observation, research and communication
- Develop social relationships
- Support and add to the body of knowledge and various disciplines ie. history and archaeology.
- Encourage interest in and protection of the environment ie. beaches
- Assist Law Enforcement and Archaeology
- Incentive for the Development of Technologies
- Supporting markets including metal detectors and accessories, and publications
Of course I could break many of those down and elaborate on the categories, but I think the list gives a good idea of the many ways metal detecting and treasure hunting contribute to the health and well-being of our society.
You should be aware of the many contributions made by detectorist and be ready to promote the activity when it is attacked or misunderstood.
You might be surprised to learn, for example, that I have been contacted in the past by an academic geologists that studies erosion.

By the way, the publisher is Bloomberg News, which is owned by the former Presidential candidate and Trump hater, so there is a definite and predictable spin to the article.

Virtually every aspect of America, including business, academia and government has been infiltrated and is very much influenced by China. It is amazing, how influential they are in America.
If you have any interest in the welfare of America, you owe it to yourself to be broadly informed.

The Covid hospitalization statistics in the local area are bad. At one time St. Lucie was down to 45 hospitalized Covid patients (assuming the statistics are accurate), and now St. Lucie County has about a hundred more than that.
That isn't good if it is true. Be aware.

We are still having some nice big tides but very little surf.
You can take advantage of the smaller surf in a variety of ways.
Happy hunting,
