1/15/21 Report - Six-Foot Statue Found by Farmers. Sand Compactness. Glass and Jet Rings.

Beach Daisies Following the Sun.

If you pay attention, metal detecting might give you a better understanding and appreciation of nature.  These happy looking flowers thrive where you'd think there wouldn't be much to nourish them.

Beach Survey.

I saw this yesterday south of Fort Pierce South Jetty Park.  Undoubtedly a sign of another beach renourishment project.  Tons of sand will be coming to the Treasure Coast this year.

Depth of Footprints Show How Mushy the Sand Is.

You can tell a lot about walking along the beach.  There will be areas that are more firm than others.  As you probably know, mushy sand is not a good sign for metal detecting.

One advantage of going barefoot is getting a better feel for what is under your feet.  If you come to a good hard area, check it out.

Sometimes the firmness will be caused by a layer of shell not far under the sand.  That is not so good, but sometimes the firmness will indicate removal of newer layers of sand and an older layer of more packed sand being exposed.

DJ added to my list of metal detecting benefits, teaching patience.  That is a good thought.

I don't think it goes on the list, but there is always an aesthetic element.  How often have you noticed an especially beautiful sunrise or sunset or something like that while detecting.  The nice lines of an old bottle will often impress me.

One day I posted a photo of a bunch of old broken bottles.  Alberto S. turned one of those photos into this work of art.

Art Created From Bottle Photo.

Below is the original photo.

Broken Bottles.

I also enjoy repurposing some finds, such as old wood and bottles.

You can remove and grind the lips of old stopper-top bottles to make nice antique glass finger rings.

Glass finger rings were common during the Spanish colonial period, but I don't remember anyone ever reporting such a find.  I suspect they mostly broke beyond recognition.

See p. 24 of Deagan's book, Artifacts of the Spanish Colonies of Florida of the Caribbean, 1500 -1800.

Finger rings made of jet were also common.

Statue Found by Farmers.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Farmers digging in a citrus grove near Mexico’s Gulf coast have found a striking, six-foot-tall statue of a female figure...

An archaeologists noted “if there is only one such find, it’s hard to say whether it is significant, or even correctly identified. Archaeology works best with repeated occurrences, to show a pattern.”...

Here is the link for more about that.
