5/12/21 Report - 1715 Fleet Coin Values In 1977. Salvage Photo for ID. Handle Find Date?

1977 Bowers And Ruddy Auction Catalog Cover.

Since the most recent Sedwick auction has concluded, I will be taking a look to see how prices of 1715 coins and artifacts are doing.  I have a copy of the 1977 Bowers and Ruddy catalog along with the realized prices so I can compare the 1977 prices with the prices for similar 2021 items auctioned.  That is a 51 year span.  Of course you have to adjust for the loss of purchasing power of the dollar, which, as I recall, was about 4.4 times greater in 1977.

I remember that in 1959, I think it was, the price of a Hersey bar was 5 cents.  There was a competitor, Lunch Bar, that came out and cost only 3 cents, which is what I bought when I could find it.

Today I won't get into individual items yet, but below is a page that gives what Bowers and Ruddy provided as price guidelines for the gold coins in the 1977 auction.

First, here is what the 1977 catalog said about grading.

So in 1977 the estimaed prices gold escudos based upon current market values were $800 - $1300 for 8-escudos, $600 - $1000 for 4-escudos, $200 - $500 for 2-escudos and $100 - $300 for 1-escudos.  That is very much lower than today, but you have to adjust for changes in the purchasing power of the dollar.

Now grading of cobs is a bit more sophisticated.

In the future I'll look at individual items sold in 2021 and compare them to similar items sold in 1977.

Here is a photo from the catalog.  I think the fellow on the right is Bob Luyandyk (deceased).  I can't identify the fellow on the left.

I most distinctly remember Bob sitting on the back of Virgilona while they were blowing a hole as close as they could get to the beach at John Brooks.

Can anyone name the other diver in the photo?

Here is an item I found on the Indian River Ridge site.  It looks like a screw driver handle.

That Looks Like A Screw Driver Handle.

It looks like a screw driver handle, but I've not found a picture of a similar one made of metal.

Vertical ridges suggest it was made to turn horizonatally and inside the handle it has threads or ridges.

The top is labeled 3M B 6-12.  It looks pretty modern to me, but I can't find similar examples.

3M was found in 1902.  The company is known for innovation.  They encourage playing around and have a number of profitable products that were invented by accident.  Scotch Guard, for example, when a batch of something was dropped on a workers shoes and noticed to be protectivel  They invented various tapes and post-its.

Their stock has been doing very well lately.

Here is the link to an interesting article on the company said to be built by mistake.

Looks like Saturday a six foot surf is predicted.  We'll see how how that goes.
