5/16/21 Report - Values Of Half Reale Galanos. Spanish Gold Chain. Bigger Surf Coming. Beach Photos.

1715 Half Reale Galano From Mexico Mint.
Source: Catalog For Sedwick Treasure Auction No. 29.

It isn't easy to find a half reale with a date, and it is more difficult to find a half reale galano, but the recently concluded Sedwick auction offered fifteen!

Above is the first listed in the catalog.  It is lot 298.  Here is the lot description.

The realized price for this galano was $3000.

The top price for any of those half reale galanos was $4000, while the lowest realized price was $400.  That is a huge range.  The average price of the fifteen was $1427.

So why were some seen as so much more valuable than others?  There are the usual factors, and I'm sure that auction competition is a lot of it, but it seems that one big factor was grading.  Few of these galanos were NGC graded, but of the three highest priced, all were highly graded NGC coins.  The highest price half reale galano was graded NGC VF30, the second highest was graded VF30 and sold for $3250 (lot 308), and the third highest was the one shown above, which was graded NGC XF40.  Eleven were not NGC graded.

This Atocha gold chain was lot 1378 in the auction.  The realized price was $28000, or $325.58 per gram.  (The recent spot price for gold is about $59/gram for 24K.)

Here is the lot description.

John Brooks Beach Saturday Near Low Tide.

I took a quick look at the beach Saturday.  Above and immediately below is John Brooks.  Sorry about the finger.

John Brooks Beach Saturday Near Low Tide.

The beach steepened up a little.  Now the waves are hitting staight on.  The Fort Pierce area beaches were busy Saturday.  The beach along the causseway was crowded, as was most everyplace else around there.

It was fairly hot and good numbers were getting in the water.   You should be able to find some modern jewelry these days.

Frederick Douglass Beach Saturday Near Low Tide.

You can see a nice little flat area in the shallow water.

Jensen Beach had to be crowded, as it often is these days.  There should be some good modern jewelry finds there.

It looks like the prediction for a bigger surf next week is holding.  I'm eager to see how that works out.

If you travel north or south on Indian River Drive, I want you to know it has become something of a death trap.  It seems like every week there is a fatality or bad wreck there.   They are trying to figure out what to do about it.

Yesterday a couple cars went over the river bank by the Walton Rd. intersection, where they recently put in stop signs.    That part of Indian River Drive is still closed Sunday morning, so check.   It might be safer to choose another route anyhow.

I have a lot to talk about.  I'll be doing more price analysis on Spanish gold chains and other things.  I have new inland finds and received some from nice ones from another readers.  I'll be posting some of those soon.

By the way, gasoline hit $4/gallon in California.  I'm expecting the same here in a year or so.

Happy hunting,
