6/6/22 Report - A Corroded Gold-Looking Ring: What It Is. An Old Pharmacy Bottle and Pontiac Token.

Badly Corroded Gold Looking Ring Find.

Below is a closer view of the above ring.  Do you know what it is made of?  I'll give you the answer below.

Closeup of Surface of Gold-Looking Ring.

This ring looks like it is gold  except for the obvious corrosion.  It is falling apart and some of the pieces are missing  You cannot see completely through it.  That is another layer of the ring that you see where the pieces are missing, not a finger.

Here is the mark on the inside of the same ring.

1/20 10K G. F. Mark.

So it is gold filled.

The quality mark for gold-filled is used for an article (except optical frames, watch cases, hollowware, or flatware) consisting of a base metal to which a sheet of at least 10 karat gold has been bonded. Additionally, the weight of the gold sheet must be at least 1/20th the total weight of the item. The quality mark may specify the ratio of the weight of the gold in the article to the total weight of the article as well as a statement of the quality of the gold expressed in karats or decimals. For example, a mark of "1/20 10K G.F." refers to a gold-filled article that consists of 10 karat gold for 1/20th of its total weight.

Bottle Embossed
M. N. PORTER and CO,,  PRESCRIPTION DRUGGISTS, CHICAGO

I'm trying to go through my bottle finds, get them researched and posted.  I just got started on that, and  I haven't learned anything about the history of the company yet.  With the amount of information on the  bottle, it shouldn't be difficult.

If you can find some history on the M. N. Porter and Co., it would be much appreciated.

Here is a token (I guess that is what you would call it) that I cleaned a bit.

Pontiac Token(?)

After doing some cleaning, I still couldn't read it all.  It is very worn.

The top says Pontiac.  I couldn't read the rest of this side, but research revealed it should say, "Chief of the Sixes."

The back says "Product of General Motors."

Product of General Motors.

Saltwater beaches are not kind to things like this.

If it was in better condition, it would be a nice collectible.

The tides are small now, and the surf mostly 2 - 4 feet.

Good hunting,
