6/3/22 Report - Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Coin. Analyzing Pot Shard. Tropical Storm Coming.

Written by the Treasureguide for the exclusive use of the Treasure Beaches Report.

Red Morning On The Treasure Coast.

A Tropical Storm will be going over our area Saturday.

Tropical Storm Coming.

It won't cause a big surf, but the surf will be a little bigger as the system heads out into the Atlantic and kicks some water back our way.

We'll be getting a lot of rain this weekend.

Pot Shard Resting on Rim (left), and Turned Right Side Up (right)

Above are two photos of the shard I found a few days ago.  Below is the photo of the same shard.

If you read the pottery guide that I recently posted, one of the techniques is to place the shard on its rim to get the orientation of vessel.  That is what the photo at the top of the post shows on the left.  Beside the shard that is resting on the rim, I used a level to provide a straight line to compare to the shape of the vessel.   On the right is the same photo showing the same shard \turned right side up.

If you check the shape of the vessel as compared to the straight line of the level, you can see that the vessel is wide at the rim, narrows (See illustration immediately above.) and then bulges back out below that.

Page 27 of the pottery guide tells how the shape of a pot can often be determined from a shard (See below),  I found that helpful, but added the use of the level to the technique. I felt that the straight edge made the profile more easily observable.  I suspect the bottom was bulbous and narrowed at the bottom, but do not know that for sure.

Here is a section from the pottery guide.

I'll add the link to my reference links list.

Here is the link once again.

A pot shard can provide valuable information.

In England they are celebrating the Queen's platinum jubilee.  I once found, and previously posted, a silver jubilee (25 years) coin.

Here it is once again.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee 2022

That coin was found on a South Florida beach many years ago.

Good hunting,
