It looks like this one will turn into hurricane Ernesto.  At this point the prediction is for it to turn north and remain well east of Florida.

  • The formation of the next tropical storm appears increasingly possible near the Lesser Antilles in the coming days.
  • After that, its future is uncertain later in the week.
  • The latest model guidance suggests a northward curve somewhere from Puerto Rico to the southern Bahamas.
  • All interests in the Caribbean islands, the Bahamas and U.S. East Coast should monitor the forecast closely.

Keep an eye on this one.  Even if it stays out a ways it could still send us some waves.

Hurricane Debby brought more than powerful winds and storm surge to Florida — packages of cocaine worth more than $1 million also made landfall, officials said, marking the latest in a string of recent discoveries of drugs along Florida shores.

Debby, which slammed into the state as a Category 1 hurricane but has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, washed the drugs ashore in the Florida Keys, U.S. Border Patrol acting chief patrol Agent Samuel Briggs II wrote on social media.

"Hurricane Debby blew 25 packages of cocaine (70 lbs.) onto a beach in the Florida Keys," Briggs wrote, posting two images of the packages...

I've told before of the mornng when I found huge bales of marijuana on John Brooks beach.  That kind of thing happens every once in a while.

Someone asked me the other day about what kind of fossils have been found on Treasure Coast beaches.  There are numerous kinds and they range from thousand to millions of years old.  Below is a list off the top of my head.  The list is undoubtedly not complete but it will give you some idea of the kinds of fossils that I know have been found.

Among the most commonly found on the Treasure Coast are turtle scutes, horse teeth, and fish and snake vertebrae. Turtle scute are the most common.

Here is a link to a post that shows a variety of Treasure Coast found fossils.

And here is a central scute that was made into a pendant for a necklace.

It might seem strange that horse teeth are so prominent in the Florida fossil record, but they are among the most common finds.

The Florida fossil record is one of the richest in the world and spans 30 million years.  We often hear that the Spaniards brought horses to the new world, which is true, but horses were in the new world over 50 million years before going extinct at the end of the last Ice Age.  See Fossil Horses – Florida Museum of Natural History (ufl.edu).  For the evolution of the horse, see What Is the Origin and Evolution of the Horse? - Stages and Modern Breeds (animalwised.com).  The earliest were dog-size forest dwellers.

Here are three fossil horse teeth along with one modern unfossilized horse tooth.

Other fossils found on Treasure Coast beaches include mammoth, mastodon, sloth, dolphin, whale, dugong or manatee, camel, rhinoceros, tapir, wolf, gator teeth and scutes, and many others.

You can also find some real gems such as fossilized shells with calcite crystals.

You can also find fossils embedded in conglomerates.  See The Treasure Beaches Report Direct From Florida's Treasure Coast.: 5/28/15 Report - Unique Beach Treasures. Fossil Shells With Calcite Crystals.

Take a close look at the clump shown below.  Notice the calcite crystal shell sticking out of the top.

You can often find fossils sticking out of clumps like that.  They will often be black.

That will give you something to look for.  They are all treasures of the Treasure Coast.

Good hunting,
