8/19/24 Report - Metal Detecting Finds Around the House or in the Garage. Some Observations and Recommendations.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of the Treasure Beaches Report.

Detectorist's Cluttered Workbench.

If you visit a detectorist, you might see a metal detector or two or three or more along with other tools of the trade. such as scoops or sifters.  And if you go out to the garage, you might find a cluttered workbench such as the one shown above displaying a disorganized variety of objects along with some of the other handy tools.  Or, you might find a neater more organized workbench.

When I took that photo I didn't realize the variety of tools that appeared in the picture.  There is a microscope, jeweler's loop, scale and ruler.

Some Bottles on Shelves.

Keeping bottles on shelves like this is not the best choice.  I know one old timer who lost the best part of his collection when a shelf fell down.  Better bottles should be stored in a better place, perhaps packed and boxed and labeled.

For me it seems there are always several odd things that haven't been put back yet.  Maybe they are being cleaned or researched.

Miscellaneous Odd Finds That Need to Be Organized and Stored or Disposed Of.

Select finds can be nicely displayed and actually find a place inside the house like the ones shown below.

Fossils In Display Stands.

A detectorist can accumulate a lot of coins and other finds.  Many will need cleaning and conservation, which can take a lot of time and space.

You can spend a lot of coins without cleaning them if you use the self-pay machines at places like Wal-Mart or Winn-Dixie.

I've stressed the importance of recording, organizing, and storing finds before.  You will probably refine your collection over time and dispose of some.  Unless you have a barn or something, there just won't be enough space. I also always recommend keeping valuable items in a bank lockbox.

I've done a few posts on display cases and have posted a lot of very nice displays created by some of the blog's readers.  I especially like the little display cases shown with the fossils above.  You can use them for quite a variety of types of finds.

Ernesto is still going north and away from us.  Not much of anything else on the National Hurricane Center map for our area.

The surf will be decreasing today.  We are still having some high tides. I posted about the Supermoons a couple days ago.

Good hunting,
