6/18/24 Report - Metal Detector Coin Finds: Seven Little Indians. First Named Tropical Storm of the Season.

1902 Indian Head Cent Find.

You don't find many old US coins metal detecting Florida beaches, but here are some Indian Head pennies from Florida beaches.  Like many other coins found on beaches, they are not in the best condition.  

I'm showing seven little Indians today.  They are common dates.  Nothing spectacular.

The 1902 Indian Head Penny was produced in large numbers (87, 376, 704). As a result of the coin’s low face value and these large numbers, examples of errors are not uncommon.

These errors can include: faint traces that the 1902 date was punched into the coin die after it had been made; coins struck off-center so that parts of the blank are visible around the main coin design; double-struck coins or blockages, in which two coins have accidentally been stamped together.

1900 Indian Head Cent.

Indian Head pennies are unique one-cent coins minted from 1859 to 1909 when the US Mint started Lincoln wheat penny production. Most of these beautiful pieces are heavily worn out because of the long time spent in circulation.

On the other hand, the 1900 Indian Head penny value can be high for pieces in the mint state. These coins are collectible nowadays, while well-preserved specimens are rare and can be worth a fortune.

1903 Indian Head Cent.

The Philadelphia Mint made 85,092,703 Indian Head Pennies in 1903. An MS 60 BN sold for $4,600 on 16th February 2001 but it’s only worth $55 in September 2023. The highest known grade is MS 66 BN, and with three submissions, it’s worth $550 in September 2023. But an MS 66+ RB sold for $2,150 on 27th July 2023.

 

1903 Indian Head Cent.

In the red zone, an MS 67 RD sold for $17,250 on 4th November 2004. Nearly 20 have shown up so their value is down to so $8500 September 2023.  However, since PCGS has only three coins graded MS 67+ RD, their estimated value in September 2023 is $20,000. The most recent sale for an MS 67+ RD was $15,000 in April 2021. An MS 67 RD was $9,000 in July 2023.

1903 Indian Head Cent.

Coins minted in 1904 belonged to one of the last series before the US Mint replaced them with popular Lincoln pennies. They were almost perfect, with intricate detailing on both sides, but even that couldn’t help this lovely design.

As the centennial of Lincoln’s birth approached, congress started a campaign for new pennies with the 16th President’s image on the obverse.

1904 Indian Heade Cent.

Only one mint issued Indian Head cents in 1905. The total mintage in Philadelphia was 80,719,163 coins, including over 2,000 proofs intended for collectors. Most others were released into circulation and spent years in everyday use.

1905 Indian Head Cent.

Most Indian cents are decent enough to bring in a few dollars, but those in better condition can be very valuable because they are hard to find in great condition.
