Mystery Find Shown With Chris' Hand. Photo by Chris N. |
I have a few new images of the mystery item. the one above shows the item in Chris' hand, so you can get an idea of the size. It seems to be about two inches high and maybe and inch and a half across.
Here is another image from Chris that seems to show the design on the object better.

In the top image, it looks like the ball on one side fell off while Chris was handling the object or else it is under his finger.
Anyhow, anyone have any ideas?

Detectorists are overwhelmingly fine people. I hear from many, and they are great. They respect property rights, ask for permission, obey laws, help people find lost objects, help law enforcement, report archaeologically significant finds, fill holes, remove junk, respect other detectorists and often try to help others. The vast majority of detectorists do all that and more. They don't get carried away by greed.
Once in a while you'll read or hear of a treasure hunter that got into trouble with the law. There are some that get carried away by the power of the ring. I call them Gollum Detectorists. They might break laws or do whatever they can to make a find or get ahead. Once in a blue moon a "treasure hunter" will get arrested or make news in a bad way. Some archaeologists try to characterize all treasure hunters like that, but those archaeologists are motivated by the same type of greed.
I've encountered very few Gollum Detectorists over the many years I've been detecting, and can definitely say they are not the people that I routinely hear from through this blog. Instead of greedy and selfish, they are humble and helpful. I feel like I've made many unmet friends. Thanks.

Nothing significant of the National Hurricane Center map. That one wave is still out there, but I don't expect much from that.
The surf preditions are more interesting.

The wind has shifted and I'm getting some wind from the NNW today. We'll have a small surf today, but look out at the weekend - 4 to 6 feet. Not bad.
Happy hunting,
