11/1/22 Report - Finds, Including Mystery Find for ID. Price of Escudos in 1977. Two Storms Now and Bigger Surf Coming.

Group of Finds by Chris N.

Chris N. found these items, as well as the cross that I posted recently in an area where reales and gold coins are rumored to have been found in North Florida.

The coin is an 1887 Austrian 2-Heller coin.

The pointed object is an item Chris thought might possibly be a bronze toothpick, but he wanted ID help.  Here is a closer view.

Pointed Bronze Object Found by Chris N.

It looks to me like it is about two inches long.  I thought it looked like it could be a slice cut from a larger piece and wondered if the protrusion, on what I would gather to be the top, had a hole for suspension.  Chris said the sides were smooth and showed no signs of being cut and there was no hole in the top.

What do you think it is?  Any and all ideas appreciated.

I have a couple ideas I'll look into when I get a chance.

Above are two Mexico-minted 1714 8-escudos auctioned in a Bowers and Ruddy auction in 1977.

The realized price list shows that the first sold in 1977 for $1350, and the second $1200.

It takes about $4.90 in 2022 dollars to match the purchasing power of one dollar in 1977.  So these coins would have to sell for $6615 and $5880 just to keep pace with inflation.  And while going from $1350 and $1200 to $6615 and $5880 might seem like good appreciation at first glance, taking into account inflation, it is no appreciation at all.  It would all be inflation.

I just picked those two out of many that were sold in 1977.  I'll compare that with current prices for somewhat similar coins being sold today.

We have two tropical storms now: Lisa and Martin.  Martin is headed north and Lisa west.

Looks like we could have some bigger surf in a few days.

Good hunting,
