12/12/22 Report - Still Interesting Areas Out There Even While Some Of the Most Detected Areas Aren't So Good. Some Nice Old Finds.

Here is another post illustrating what I always say about there always being somewhere to hunt and something to find.

I received the following email along with the accompanying photos from Michael T.

Hello it’s Mike T. In Stuart. I took the pups for a good walk this morning on South Hutchinson Island, near the house of refuge, and the waves are gigantic today with a high tide creating some very nice washouts in some areas. I brought the dogs home and went back with my gear to hunt a few of the better looking spots
Not so many good finds today as some of the areas I’ve been working lately we’re actually sanded in from the high surf, but a few small spots had really been opened up in some of the more remote sections of the beach. It was in one of those spots where there is some very dark brown almost oily sand that I found this piece of pottery, which I believe might be a piece of Indian pottery. It is just down the beach a little ways from where they recently found a number of skeletons. In the small spot where I found this piece washing out of the dark sand there was also quite a few oyster shells, as are often seen in some of the Indian trash, pile or refuse areas. I know you have many readers who are very knowledgeable hopefully someone out there will look at this and confirm or deny that it could be a piece of Ais Indian pottery.
The erosion is quite bad at this point, and it won’t be long before the dune is breached in three or four other places on MacArthur Boulevard heading towards Bathtub Beach it will only take one more good Northeast storm to do it. I’ve seen this area eroded before, but never this bad and never so much. It will be interesting to see what the county does to mitigate it. For now, though some fantastic hunting on sand that has not been exposed for many decades, or even longer. Happy holidays to you and good health for the new year!

Dunes and Rocks

Notice the dunes and rocks shown above.

Thanks much for sharing, Michael.  First look at the photos, I'd say it looks like it could be an indigenous pot shard.  Very nice find.  Take a look at the markings and you might be able to learn more about those shards with a little research.

Remember when the skull was found after Nicole down by the House of Refuge?

Many times, I've mentioned how rocks and other obstructions can cause erosion when other areas without such obstructions will not be eroding. And just a day or two ago I said, "One of the good things, is that the wind direction will change, which will give a chance for different beaches to open up. There are some places that erode occasionally from a south wind, for example, and we are supposed to get some of that in a few days. You might want to look for spots that haven't recovered much from Nicole."

I often throw out tips like that without elaborating much.

Remember, when most places aren't producing, there can still be places that are producing.

As I also often say, don't get stuck in a rut.  You might have to do something a little different to keep finding things.

Back after Nicole a good number of reales (with dates of 1715 and earlier) and even a few escudos were found down in the Martin County.

The surf is only slightly decreasing, but will increase back up to near nine feet if the current predictions are correct.

Also note, as I've been saying, the changing wind directions.

Good hunting,
