12/19/22 Report - Four Reale Found. Yesterday Created Some Small Cuts And Dips But Today A Lot of the Beaches Are Building Again.

Reale Found by Joe R.

Saturday I received the following message and the photo above from Joe. R.

Joe said, "There are still some beaches giving up Spanish. I found this nice 4 reale two days ago."

From what I can see from the photo, it looks like a Mexico four-reale, assayer G.  Unusual shape and good condition.   Maybe it has been cleaned some.

John Brooks Beach Monday Morning.

I went out this morning and found that John Brooks beach and others at the north end of South Hutchinson Island were building.

I also visited Blind Creek which was sandy and building too.

Even Fort Pierce South Jetty beach was building back up again.

DJ took this photo of Turtle Trail yesterday and went back this morning to take another picture to compare.

You can see the cuts at Turtle Trail in the photo below.

DJ said, Just to compare to yesterday’s pictures. This is turtle trail an hour before low tide. The Sebastian Inlet wind monitor showed we had about 18 hours of north winds until midnight and then they switched to light Northwest wind so I was curious.

So, the nice little cuts pretty much disappeared overnight.  That is a nice comparison provided by DJ.

It looks to me like what happened is the small cuts got over washed and smoothed out.   The north wind cut the beach, but then the beach got smoothed out after the wind switch.

One note of caution here.  The water is affected by the winds, but the swells do not always come from the same direction as the wind.  There is certainly not a perfect correlation between the swell and wind direction.  Sometimes the wind will create a secondary swell, which might be very small or fairly large.

But we see here, that it didn't take long for the cuts to be washed out.

Another thing to consider is that there can be good erosion without cuts.  The entire slope can move back.

I won't get into any more of the details of that now.

Notice the nice little dips in the scallops at Seagrape Trail (below).  I suspect they got washed out too.

The surf is supposed to be down to two to four feet today, but it still looked pretty rough.  I didn't see anything but building beaches on the north end of South Hutchinson Island though.
