11/5/2020 Report - Bigger Surf Coming. A Few Recent Finds From the Treasure Coast.

The surf is running around four to six feet now, but there is a bigger surf predicted for early next week.  Right now they are predicting 10 - 16 feet.  We don't get that big very often.  The prediction might not hold, of course, but it has been on the chart for a few days already so it is looking kind of solid.

The wind next Monday when the peak surf is predicted, is supposed to be ENE, which is what it is supposed to be most of the time up until then as well.

Right now the wind and waves are coming mostly from the east.  A couple days ago it was more from the north.

Eta is a tropical depression that has been hanging around down by Central America, but it could loop around, cross over Cuba and head our way.

If we actually get a 10 - 16 foot surf, it should make for some good hunting no matter the wind direction.  The beaches are not bad right now.  Some are better than others, but things are being found and there is a lot still out there.  As you probably know, some old shipwreck finds have already been made this week

The tides are still relatively high too.

I'd be surprised if the predictions for Eta are correct.  Some models have it going more east and others more west.  In my amateur opinion, it might weaken sooner than expected.  And what I'm seeing from some models, the wind over the Treasure Coast might be more southeast than east.

I'd just advise just keeping track of how things develop the next few days and especially this weekend.

DJ sent me a great article on musket balls and lead artifacts.  It is by far the best I've seen and gives many examples.  The article tells you what to look for on a musket ball.  You can tell a lot from looking at musket balls and the marks on them.  And for balls that have been shot or distorted in shape, there is a formula for calculating the diameter from the weight.

Below is the title and author.

The article I'm talking about begins on page 7.

Thanks DJ!

Silver Bracelet Found

This silver bracelet was found recently north of the Disney resort.

There were many small pieces of metal, including musket balls, bullets and other bits of lead, found on the beach Monday and Tuesday, not to mention a few half reales.

Small Gold Wing Found On the Beach Monday.

Here is a small unmarked gold wing that was found at Turtle Trail with all the other small pieces.  A piece is broken off one end where it might have had a loop or attachment.

Here is another example of the many small unidentified pieces found Monday and Tuesday.

Unidentified Small Piece of Metal Found Monday.

I'd rate current beach metal detecting conditions at a 2.  There are still a lot of targets out there.  There are both old and new targets to be found.  Wednesday I had a little time to detect and was picking up more greenies. I still have things from a couple weeks ago that need cleaning.

Happy hunting,
