11/9/2020 Report - Big Surf Causes Little Additional Erosions. Many Detectorists Hit Turtle Trail This Morning. More Lead Shot Found.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

John Brooks Beach Monday Morning.

We had two very windy rainy days and some big surf, but little beach erosion.  There was some erosion, but not much and beach conditions did not improve much.

As I've said many times, it takes more than big waves.  The swells were coming from the east the past couple days.

We got the most improvement in beach conditions last Monday and Tuesday when the wind was coming from the north.  Once it changed direction, we got very little erosion after that.

John Brooks Beach Sunday Afternoon.

I didn't see anyone detecting John Brooks.  It was blowing like a hurricane when I was there, which might be the reason.

There were a lot of detectorists at Turtle Trail first thing this morning.  Unfortunately the high surf didn't improve beach conditions much overnight.  There was a little sand loss in places, but also some building.  And the cliff that was created Monday moved back just a touch more.

The photo below was take south of the second flag pole.

Russ P. found these lead items.

Lead Shot Found Sunday by Russ P.

Russ also mentioned seeing one fellow knocked over by the surf.  Be careful.

I'll repost this interesting link on musket balls.  Maybe you saw it before.

Thanks to DJ for that link.

Scott B. found the following unidentified object on 10/22.  The two top views show the object as found.  The bottom two views show the same object cleaned.

Scott asked my advice on how to clean the object, and I suggested soaking it in white vinegar, which is 5% acid.  I told him to monitor the progress carefully so in case anything started to go wrong, he could stop it.

He was happy with the results.

Not sure what it is.  What do you think?

The surf will be decreasing for the next few days.  That might give you a chance to get farther out on the beach than has been possible lately.  The water hadn't been backing off much at low tide.

Happy hunting,
